TEST ENGINEER COOP

Axcelis is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Test Development Engineering (TDE) co-op to join our collaborative and inclusive TDE team. As an intern, you will work closely with experienced Test Engineers to design, develop, and implement production level test systems for our wide range of modules and electromechanical sub-assemblies used on ion implanters. While being mentored by a senior engineer, you will be expected to identify test gaps, propose corrective actions, and implement the required changes. The projects and tasks that you work on while you are here will have real impact to the company and quantifiable metrics to measure success. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in test automation, quality assurance, and overall electromechanical system understanding in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities to Anticipate:

  • Provide support to production by troubleshooting test hardware and software
  • Interface with assembly and test technicians to solicit and implement process and fixture improvements
  • Follow department’s documentation standards and best practices
  • Help maintain and organize lab inventory
  • Identify test gaps and project KPI’s
  • Create or update assembly and test procedures in the visual instruction system OpCenter
  • Analyze data to drive quality or defect issues to root cause and corrective action
  • Develop and execute improvement projects to increase first pass yield, increase safety, decrease cycle time, or reduce cost 
  • Assist on complex builds by making harnesses, wiring controllers, building PDs, etc.
  • Support Engineering NPI’s or prototypes by conducting experiments as required
  • Design and 3D print small parts, jigs, or spacers for test fixtures
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively

Desired Skills

  • Currently pursuing a BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrates logical troubleshooting skills for complex electromechanical systems
  • Ability to read or interpret complex schematics (electrical, pneumatic, communication) and mechanical drawings
  • Desire to learn multifaceted engineering skills working on cross functional projects in a collaborative work environment
  • Experience using common lab/hand/power tools such as but not limited to oscilloscopes, multimeters, soldering, wire crimpers, power drills, etc.
  • Familiarity with LabVIEW, TestStand, AutoCAD/Draftsight, Creo/CreoView, is a plus
  • Basic understanding of PLM and ERP systems is a plus
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, OneNote)
  • A continuous improvement mindset to enhance manufacturing test methods through process modernization
