Job Description Summary:

Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing care administered to meet patient care needs. Under the direction of the Director, responsible for routine daily operations of the assigned unit. The employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assigns and monitors patient care according to age-specific needs, assessment, acuity needs, plan of care, and competency of assigned available personnel.
  • Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
  • Participates in training; evaluates employee performance; and participates in counseling, reprimands, disciplinary actions, and dismissals for assigned personnel.
  • Responds to complaints and incidents, conduct investigations, takes corrective action and prepares documentation.
  • Evaluates, recommends, and orders adequate supplies and equipment necessary for delivery of quality patient care.
  • Evaluates, interprets, and implements hospital and nursing policies and procedures for assigned unit and recommends changes as needed.
  • Informs Director of the level of care being administered and patient, personnel, and physician satisfaction.
  • Provides clinical and classroom instruction in the field of expertise as necessary to include patient and staff teaching and discharge planning.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
     

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Completion of a diploma, associate, or baccalaureate degree in nursing required. Additional educational preparation in administrative techniques is desirable.  

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.
  • Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.
  • ACLS certification preferred.
  • Certification in area of clinical expertise by recognized authoritative agency desirable.
  • Additional certifications/competencies may be required at department discretion.  

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 2 years continuous, current hospital nursing experience preferred.
