Senior Director, Associate General Counsel – US, CA and AU Markets

Purpose: 

To work as part of a small, tight-knit legal team and provide legal advice to the eBay Canada business across a broad range of commercial, intellectual property, competition and consumer law and regulatory matters.

Core responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate optimally and build trusted relationships with various units within the business and counterparts in other global legal teams to provide consistent, creative advice and guidance that is strategic and commercially focused. 
  • Advise on laws and regulations, particularly those relevant/ applicable to e-commerce, including consumer protection law, competition law, marketing, advertising, content regulation, copyright, trademarks, data protection and disputes. 
  • Provide legal advice on marketing or advertising campaigns, sales activities, product launches and site features.  
  • Prepare, negotiate and review general commercial agreements, including partnerships, services, licensing and technology agreements, as well as terms and conditions.  
  • Investigate and assist in managing/ advise on legal escalations and complaints via consumer and regulatory bodies.
  • Liaise with external counsel where necessary. 
  • Guide the business on internal processes and provide regular training on legal issues. 
  • Think strategically about how to scale the department and implement operational efficiencies to improve our ways of working. 
  • Perform special projects/initiatives and other duties as may be assigned. 

Qualifications:  

  • Law degree from a Canadian law school and license to practice in Canada.
  • 10+ years of legal experience in a top tier firm, in-house at a large national or international company, or similar. 

Experience: 

  • Knowledge of and experienced in the ‘online’/ e-commerce space and being ‘tech-savvy’ preferred.  
  • Experience in advising on a variety of commercial legal concerns and risks, including competition and consumer law issues, disputes resolution and marketing/advertising activities, ideally within a retail or online/e-commerce context. 
  • Proven ability to work with stakeholders to negotiate and draft commercial contracts. 
  • Excellent academics and legal training.

  • Capability to handle uncertainty and excel in a dynamic setting; a hands-on, outcome-focused method. 
  • Ability to identify, prioritise, analyze and resolve a wide variety of legal issues quickly and optimally. 
  • Excellent judgment and project management skills, ideally with track record of seeing new ways of doing things. 
  • A strong commercial outlook and desire to understand and assist the business. 
  • Attention to detail and excellent analytical skills, the ability to balance legal and business risk with commercial opportunity. 
  • A strategic and creative thinker with self-confidence, a ‘can do’ attitude, sound judgement and a good sense of humour. 
  • Demonstrate shared leadership values and proficiencies – must be courageous, driven, inventive, a team player with excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills, able to coach and support other team members and a great communicator. 
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances.  
  • Strong interest in eBay and a user of its products. 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Particularly skilled in the plain English expression of complex legal issues. 
  • Excellent time and work priority management.
