Role Description

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team of investment professionals as BMO Capital Partners expands into the US. The Managing Director will be responsible for leading transactions from start to finish, including origination, structuring, due diligence, negotiation and closing of new investment opportunities. As Managing Director, you will help lead the expansion of our investment mandate into the US, provide coverage for newly onboarded clients and work closely with a variety of internal partners including BMO Sponsor Finance, BMO Technology & Innovation Banking and BMO Diversified Industries Group. You will work with and manage a team of directors and associates to evaluate new investment opportunities and manage/monitor the portfolio. The day-to-day responsibilities of the Managing Director will include:

  • Lead the evaluation and due diligence of direct equity, subordinated debt, and special opportunities;
  • Present investment opportunities to the Investment Committee and defend the valuation of investments quarterly to the Valuation Committee;
  • Lead legal documentation review and negotiation;
  • Monitor existing portfolio companies; develop relationships with management to stay up to date on performance and outlook;
  • Build relationships and develop a strong network with private equity, growth equity and venture capital firms;
  • Collaborate with colleagues across BMO Financial Group, including Sponsor Finance, Technology & Innovation Banking, Diversified Industries Group and Capital Markets, in Canada and the U.S.;
  • Support BMO’s network of Commercial Banking Relationship Manager’s across the US by pitching BMO Capital Partners’ capabilities and evaluating potential opportunities;
  • Monitor investment trends, develop investment theses and pitch on potential investment ideas; and,
  • Lead special projects as required.


Qualifications

The following qualifications are a must:

  • 10-15+ years of experience within Investment Banking, Private Equity, Venture Capital,  Leveraged Finance, Commercial Banking or other relevant areas;
  • Ability to navigate between industries with a deep understanding of the financing needs of private companies from early to mature stage;
  • Deep understanding of capital structure and principal investing, very strong analytical skills;
  • Enjoys working in a high growth and fast-paced environment;
  • Confidence, presence, and determination to develop new relationships and succeed in a very dynamic and demanding business environment;
  • Ability to work independently and lead a number of concurrent transactions;
  • Experience working in a multiple member deal team context and a strong team-player mentality and a leader who will take an active role in developing our future talent; and,
  • Proactive attitude, deep sense of ownership and initiative.

The following qualifications will be considered an asset:

  • CFA, CPA, CA, CBV designation or MBA;

  • This position can be based in a variety of locations where BMO has strong established relationships.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
