About the role

Vanguard is a company built on the simple premise that an investment firm should manage its funds solely in the interests of its clients.  The Equity Index Group is a critical arbiter of our clients’ investment success, and we are responsible for managing equity index portfolios for Vanguard’s European domiciled accounts. Our experience in Europe is a compelling 15-year growth story and as Senior Portfolio Manager you will play a vital role in helping the team to continue that growth across business lines, product sophistication, geographies, and AUM. 

The successful candidate will have a highly attuned risk mindset, understanding how to appropriately manage risks in a Vanguard context. Deep technical experience, trading/portfolio management, and team management skills are prerequisites to success in this role, and the successful individual will be able to balance day to day delivery with inspiring, mentoring and developing crew in the team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Managing and coaching a team of Portfolio Manager / Traders.
  • Day-to-day management of equity index portfolios for Vanguard’s European domiciled accounts. This includes investing cash flows, trading index changes and electing on corporate action, as well as equity trading responsibilities.
  • Ability to lead special projects related to equity fund management, trading and innovation.
  • Drives ideas and encourage discussion to evolve and advance the strategic approach and operational processes of the desk.
  • Demonstrates in-depth understanding of index methodology, benchmark characteristics and risk model attributes.
  • Lead and supervise others in the team to enable high quality analysis on index changes and rebalances to provide the desk with value added insights.
  • Develops a deep understanding of equity market structure, trading automation and algorithmic trading techniques.
  • Develops and maintains broad knowledge and awareness of trading industry developments, competitors, and exchange rules that impact the trading community.
  • Comfortable in attracting, coaching and mentoring of talent.
  • Proactively represent EIG on key projects relating to product management, government relations, technology among other things as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Significant senior level portfolio management or trading experience is a prerequisite, ideally in an equity index environment.
  • Person must have extensive managerial experience with a track record of inclusive, inspirational management, having led significant teams in a complex, global firm.
  • Be inquisitive and questioning of the status quo to ensure we always strive to provide clients with the best outcome.
  • CFA strongly preferred.

Please note: most teams at Vanguard work on a hybrid basis, however the EIG team, along with many colleagues in our Investment Management Group, are in the office 5 days per week, with ad-hoc flexibility.
