What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this role the Capital Projects Execution and Controls (CPEC) is accountable for Program and Project Management, Project Portfolio Management and Project Execution functions globally at Amgen.

The Engineering Projects Sr Mgr. at Amgen manages the planning, implementation, and completion of engineering projects. They coordinate with various teams, lead all aspects of project budgets, timelines, and ensure all projects align with company objectives.

The Engineering Projects Sr Mgr. Position presents an opportunity for a qualified candidate to further enhance their leadership abilities, apply proficiency in project and program management to effectively manage large, highly complex programs, demonstrate versatility, and cultivate financial savvy and overall understanding of Amgen’s business.

This highly visible position interacts with all levels of the organization. The candidate must have a demonstrated track record in project management, strong leadership and communication, and the ability to approach issues from a strategic perspective. This includes the ability to translate strategy into ambitious, actionable objectives to effectively drive multi-functional teams, advocate client positions throughout the project life cycle, and make value-based decisions. Hands on experience of working in Packaging and/or biologics fill-finish area is highly preferred.

Primary responsibilities include leadership of multi-faceted, multi-functional, projects and programs.

The Engineering Projects Sr Mgr. Plays a meaningful role in eliciting client requirements and specifications for projects and ensures that business drivers are clearly defined and communicated. The Engineering Projects Sr Mgr. Develops project funding requirements and strategy and guides the project through the gated funding process. The Engineering Projects Sr Mgr. must bring to bear knowledge of site Operations to ensure that projects are driven with minimal disruption to scheduled plant / site activities and must provide construction management guidance to ensure that projects are performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with all applicable codes and Amgen specifications.

The Engineering Projects Sr Mgr. verifies that projects are planned, performed, and documented in accordance with Amgen’s Engineering Project Delivery methodology for delivering best-in-class services on capital construction projects. In addition, the Engineering Projects Sr Mgr. will partner with the project Engineering Technical Lead to ensure that the engineering design process follows Amgen’s Equipment Acquisition Process and Commissioning and Qualification Program.

The Engineering Projects Sr Mgr. will ensure effective communication flow between groups including Global Capital Projects Management, functional leadership, project partners, Engineering and Automation, Facilities and Operations, Quality, Global Strategic Sourcing, Project Controls Services, Environmental Health and Safety, Global Asset Planning, Finance and Strategy, Law, and relevant corporate / global networks.

Functions:

Defines project scope, forms project team, develops project strategy, master schedule and spending schedule, for projects supporting the engineering, construction, start up, commissioning, and qualification of various facilities, ranging from cGMP manufacturing (i.e., Packaging, Drug Product), laboratories, Utility plants, Warehousing, and Distribution centers. Including:

  • Establishment of project objectives, and interprets company policies
  • Prepares project funding documents with scope, cash flow, schedule, and deliverables
  • Motivates project teams to a successful outcome
  • Leads engineering and contractor evaluation and selection process
  • Sets up logistics system, including RFQ’s, bid selection materials management, invoice approval
  • Reviews and approves cost estimates, sets up systems for checks and balance
  • Integrates complete team into planning and design reviews for projects
  • Frequent review of progress vs. schedule vs. cost with appropriate teams and provide regular updates to client and management
  • Develops and manages multiple large contracts
  • Establishes policies for major projects, interprets, implements, and recommends modifications to company-wide policies

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of Engineering or Scientific experience

Or

Master’s degree and 4 years of Engineering or Scientific experience

Or

Bachelor’s Degree and 6 years of Engineering or Scientific experience

Or

Associate Degree and 10 years of Engineering or Scientific experience

Or

High School diploma/GED and 12 years of Engineering or Scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading Pharmaceutical / Biotechnology projects, preferably Packaging and/or Drug Product
  • Lean Construction or other continuous improvement methodology experience
  • Experience in Lifecycle Cost Analysis
  • Extensive experience in the application of project management skills and concepts with a critical understanding of related engineering disciplines
  • Leadership experience of diverse teams of engineering, scientific, construction, and facilities management within the Pharmaceutical / Biotechnology industries preferably in fill / finish and Packaging areas
  • Practical ingenuity with the ability to problem solve using practical solutions
  • Ability to interface well with internal technical, scientific, and upper level management groups
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and conflicting priorities across a broad range of facilities, engineering, and process disciplines
  • Excellent people skills featuring a demonstrated supervisory style that fits within the Amgen culture and values
  • Interpersonal and facilitation skills necessary to forge consensus among competing client interests on critical and time-sensitive issues—important in ensuring that, within Amgen's collaborative culture, projects are finished on time and on budget
  • Often acts independently to uncover and resolve issues associated with the development and implementation of processes or procedures
  • Strong analytical skills in the information and communication technologies
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to tactfully negotiate and positively influence peers and executive leadership
  • Effective oral, visual and written communication skills with the ability to listen effectively
  • Resilience and flexibility with the ability to react to changes quickly, and the ability to apply knowledge to new problems and new contexts

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
