The Manager of Professional Practice WMG is a registered professional nurse who provides leadership and management of specific responsibilities that support and advance the practice of licensed clinical staff and unlicensed assistive personnel in the Wellstar Medical Group (WMG). The Manager of Professional Practice is a member of the Chief Nursing Officer's administrative team, partnering with operations, physicians, and advanced practice providers, to create a center of excellence for his/her responsibilities, and to meet the vision and goals outlined in the system and medical group nursing strategies. In collaboration with the CNO and nursing directors, this leader is responsible to set the vision for professional practice in the medical group, including the evaluation of future initiatives for the attainment of national recognition, such as Magnet, Joint Commission, etc. 

This position provides direct leadership for the creation and enhancement of an accountability-based practice model which is created in a strong professional practice setting. The nurse leader will assume responsibility for championing the nursing professional practice model, shared governance, workforce development programs, and ongoing professional development, and maintenance of policies and competencies that support professional practice in the medical group setting.

The Manager of Professional Practice WMG serves as sponsor for performance improvement, inspiring others to seek opportunities to grow and improve their performance. This leader successfully applies Lean and evidenced-based practice to ensure all target outcomes are achieved. He/she effectively uses technology and data to make decisions and proactively mitigates unnecessary risks for his/her area of responsibility providing instruction and mentoring for assigned leaders to be able to do the same. He/She models the way by fostering exemplary skills in attaining effective teamwork and collaboration with physicians, staff, patients, and other departments. Performs other duties related to role as assigned.

  • Holds self and staff to the highest professional standards and ethics ensuring corporate compliance standards etc. are met by leaders and staff. Is an active member of one’s professional community and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice and nursing leadership – advances the field through transformational executive leadership, support of shared governance, and scholarly activity.
  • Provides program leadership and management for professional nurses and other members of the health care team as appropriate, serving as a champion for the evolution of professional practice in this clinical setting, while also providing administrative oversite of the nurse educators, and other roles that support workforce initiatives and professional practice.
  • Facilitates system and WMG process improvements that support the reduction of clinical staff errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes based on identified risks.
  • Facilitates improvement in clinical quality and safety through assessment of compliance with regulatory and/or professional standards of practice; leads periodic review and revision of WMG nursing policies.

  • Assesses current medical group status in relationship to external accrediting organizations (e.g. ANCC Magnet Designation Criteria, Joint Commission, etc.) as a benchmark to create a vision for accreditation, and opportunities and action plans for improvement.
  • Directs and implements processes, collects, and compiles evidence to ensure/exceed demonstrated adherence to the action plan, advancing professional practice.
  • Provides recommendations for and oversight for the application any awards, designations, etc. from external agencies.

  • Effectively communicates to diverse audiences on system and ambulatory issues, and this includes the ability to set standards and hold leaders and staff accountable for performance standards.
