Job Description Summary
The Technical Lead Engineer Gearbox is responsible for the design, development, and technical support of wind turbine gearboxes and related components as well as assemblies, with a focus on mechanical performance, reliability, durability, and manufacturability. This role applies engineering principles to evaluate design requirements, develop robust technical solutions, and support the introduction of new or improved gearbox designs for wind turbine applications.
The Technical Lead Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams and respected suppliers to resolve technical issues, support product validation and testing, and ensure that designs meet applicable standards, customer expectations, and business objectives. A key responsibility of the role is the integration of the gearbox into the overall wind turbine power train, requiring strong technical leadership, systems thinking, and close coordination across engineering interfaces.
The position also requires a thorough understanding of the operating demands and reliability requirements of wind energy applications.
Job Description
What You'll Do
- Lead the design, development, and technical support of wind turbine gearbox components and assemblies — from requirements definition through to validation and field support.
- Define and evaluate gearbox design requirements in alignment with system-level specifications and customer expectations.
- Perform engineering calculations and design verification activities to confirm mechanical performance, reliability, and durability.
- Manage gearbox integration into the wind turbine power train (PT), ensuring interface compatibility across engineering disciplines.
- Partner with suppliers and cross-functional teams — including systems engineering, manufacturing, quality, and service — to resolve technical issues and drive design execution.
- Conduct root cause analysis on technical and field issues, implementing corrective actions that deliver lasting improvements to reliability and cost-effectiveness.
What You'll Bring
We're looking for a technically rigorous engineer who combines deep knowledge of rotating machinery with the systems thinking needed to integrate a gearbox into a complex power train.
Required
- Significant experience in mechanical design and development of complex rotating equipment or gearboxes.
- A formal education and subsequent Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
- Strong knowledge of gearbox design principles, mechanical analysis, and design verification methods.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and relevant industry standards.
- Significant experience supporting testing, validation, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems.
Preferred
- Proven track record of leading technical work across cross-functional teams and external suppliers.
- Experience in wind energy or other high-reliability rotating machinery environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor peers and influence outcomes across organisational boundaries.
