Job Description

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:  The Consultant will apply scientific methodology to investigate and determine the extent of damage to indoor building finishes and materials from a hazardous material perspective, which may lead to legal activity, including both civil and criminal; potentially assisting a court or other parties to determine the facts of a failure or accident. The consultant, with the support of the Senior Consultant and/or Technical Lead, will be called upon to determine the extent and nature of damage, relation of the damage to an event or loss, and develop in the creation of a remediation scope of work and associated inspections during the remediation process. The role will mostly work with insurance adjusters but may work with attorneys. Some assignments may include the analysis of property damage, fire and explosion, catastrophic claims, and equipment/machinery failures. It is Envista’s intention for this role to gradually gain independence and track towards becoming a Senior Consultant, with support of the IH project team

Primary job responsibilities:

  • Conduct site assessments on commercial, industrial, and residential sites, including delineation of hazardous material and building/content damage, with the support of the Senior Consultant and/or Technical Lead
  • Take detailed and comprehensive field notes and photographs
  • Collection of samples from site following appropriate collection and handling methods, transport of samples to laboratory facilities under chain of custody best practises
  • Analyze data and field observations with support from the Senior Consultant and/or Technical Lead
  • Prepare technical reports including on letterhead and for email distribution, for review by the Senior Consultant and/or Technical Lead
  • Maintain established relationships with current clients and consultants
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities/Experience

  • 1-3 years of experience. Experienced gained during post-secondary education will be considered
  • Science or engineering degree. Work experience in a construction/abatement environment will be considered in lieu of formal post-secondary education
  • Familiar with Health and Safety Legislation, in particular Ontario Regulation 278/05, 490/09, and 833/90
  • Eligible for, or potentially currently pursuing, professional license or designation(s) including CRSP, CHSC, CIH, ROH, CET, and/or P.Eng.
  • Excellent ability to analyze, interpret, prioritize, and report pertinent information
  • Experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary parties which may include engineers, contractors, clients
  • Professional and collaborative attitude
  • Coachable, self-motivated, and solution-driven
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize and triage tasks and meet deadlines
  • Has a drivers license, access to a vehicle, able to travel locally and occasionally out of province; willingness to occasionally work outside of standard working hours (i.e., on weekends, early mornings, evenings if required for assessments and inspections)
  • Able to carry up to 30 lbs and climb a ladder
