What We'll Bring:

As the Privacy Counsel and Information Officer for TransUnion Africa, your primary purpose will be to ensure compliance with the South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), and other emerging data protection laws across Africa. Through the creation of policies and frameworks, you will guide TU on how to implement the lawful processing of personal information through a coordinated and disciplined delivery approach.

What You'll Bring:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for the South African Information Regulator and Data Protection Authorities (DPA’s) across Africa for all privacy related matters.
  • Work collaboratively with Global Privacy Operations, Compliance, Legal Counsel and business to ensure privacy compliance.
  • Chair the quarterly Africa Privacy Committee, responsible to oversee privacy compliance throughout Africa.
  • Deal with and respond to requests made to TransUnion by the South African Information Regulator and other African DPAs
  • Work with the Regulator and business on the timely resolution of investigations as well as preparing, submitting and maintaining notifications to the Regulator
  • Provide privacy legal support in respect of data security incidents
  • Advise, negotiate and support business on privacy-related contract clauses
  • Engage key executives to gain buy-in, consensus and support on POPIA, and data protection legislation by encouraging and ensuring compliance on the lawful processing of personal information
  • Analyze complex questions resulting from privacy impact assessments of new or enhanced products, helping evaluate risk for business units and senior leadership
  • Advise on the implementation of new or changed privacy regulations in South Africa and other emerging regimes across Africa
  • Escalation point for advice on day-to-day compliance with existing privacy regulations
  • Monitor for changes in regulatory/legal landscape around privacy and data protection
  • Provide legal support for privacy-related consumer complaints

Impact You'll Make:

  • Expertise in African privacy and data protection laws such as POPIA
  • Keen understanding of the changing landscape of African privacy laws, regulations and guidance
  • Experience implementing the intricacies of African privacy laws, particularly in financial services or other highly regulated industry, preferred
  • Experience reviewing new products and services to evaluate privacy and data use risks
  • Experience reviewing and drafting external facing privacy notices and internal privacy policies
  • Demonstrable understanding of how privacy laws impact, and are impacted by, technology
  • Experience in handling data incidents and engaging with Regulators is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate difficult legal concepts, anticipate potential objections and persuade senior business leaders to adopt a different point of view
  • Ability to foster relationships and become a trusted business partner
  • High level of ethics and integrity in professional matters, sensitivity for confidentiality, and respect for individuals
  • Detail-oriented with proven organizational skills and analytical ability; Ability to prioritize, problem solve, and work well under time pressure under limited to zero oversight
  • International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) CIPP or similar certifications are beneficial

This is a hybrid position and involves regular performance of job responsibilities virtually as well as in-person at an assigned TU office location for a minimum of two days a week.
