Non-Registered EEG Technician

Electroencephalogram (EEG) Technicians use specialized equipment and processes to monitor a patient’s nervous system activity. They set up, perform, and monitor EEG tests which record the electrical activity of a patient’s brain over time. EEG Technicians work under the supervision of epileptologists, neurologists, or other doctors. 
 

A caregiver in this position works 7:30am – 4:00pm with on-call requirements.  


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Perform electroencephalographic examinations. 

  • Select predetermined electrode combinations (montages) to obtain recordings, recognize artifacts and take appropriate steps to eliminate them. 

  • Monitor on the same apparatus, other variables such as electromyograms, electrocardiograms, electro-oculograms, respiration, etc. 

  • Observe patient with video recording equipment, ensure EEG and tape are lined up exactly, and check focus, lighting and microphone. 

  • Set-up patient for continuous monitoring at the bedside with video, if indicated. 

  • Instruct nursing caregivers on pushing event button and care of videos. 

  • Abstract relevant information from the patients' clinical record and obtain additional information. 

  • Successfully obtain the American Board of Registration for Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) credentialing for a Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.) within two years of hire. 


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Associate’s degree in electroneurodiagnostics or a related patient care field OR two years of direct patient care experience.  

  • One year of experience as a non-registered EEG Technician. 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity in order to place electrodes precisely and to operate recording equipment.
  • Ability to push and maneuver EEG machine weighing 320 pounds and Evoked Potential machine weighing 420 pounds.
  • Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
  • Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
