GENERAL INTRODUCTION:
The Show Systems Studio is where we produce, make, and build the magic. Our processes and tool sets take us from concept design or mock-ups all the way through to full-on production, assembly, and installation. Our Manufacturing and Production Technicians use their hands and tools to fabricate and assemble complex prototypical mechanical and electrical systems that support the designs created by their engineering colleagues. M&P Technicians are often called upon to support complex mock-ups in multiple sites and to participate in installations for new or renovated attractions. These are hands-on technical positions that demand advanced training in various trades.
Animation Production is responsible for the design, fabrication, assembly, troubleshooting installation and commissioning of highly prototypical and cutting-edge show systems that include but not limited to: Animated figures, Animated Props, Show Action Equipment, Special Effects, and Show Control cabinets that interface with multiple disciplines. Animation and Production use their hands and tools to fabricate and assemble complex prototypical mechanical systems and are required to stay current with industry standards and advancing technology.
GENERAL ROLE DESCRIPTION:
Perform Mechanical Fabrication Engineering work related to Show mechanical systems (Animatronics, Show Action Equipment, etc.) where durability, long life, reliability and safety are a must.
Function within a team performing various fabrication tasks: production strategy, fabrication and assemble complex prototypical mechanical systems, quality control and are required to stay current with industry standards and advancing technology.
CORE FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, prototype, and fabricate mechanical components and systems for animatronics, using materials such as metals, plastics, and composites.
- Be responsible for developing and following a design through to successful operation.
- Identify design conflicts and work to resolve and revise mechanical element requirements as required.
- Check detailed structure, mechanical equipment drawings, and interface drawings.
- Be responsible for submission of production substitution and drawing red lines to Show mechanical engineer.
- Supervise Contractor design activities, provide direction during production and installation, as well as resolve technical conflicts between Contractors.
- Assist in the determination of detailed work plans and priorities
- Promotion and champion of a safe work environment
- Provide mechanical element contractor support and verification of first article assembly and bench testing as required.
- Review Contractor manufacturing documentation against contract technical requirements.
- Conceptualize and innovate solutions for animation scope within scope of fabrication or installation of the product.
- Review material certifications, QAQC report and other required documentations.
- QAQC mechanical parts as needed.
- Be responsible for assigned figures from fabrication, mechanical assembly, fit-in to commission.
- Prepare and review Test and Adjust plans and procedures.
- May supervise small team of field technicians and support personnel as required.
- Verify mechanical element performance against requirements.
- Review final Show mechanical element contractor documentation and prepare/review as-built drawings.
- Review final mechanical element Test and Adjust and acceptance testing documentation against deliverables.
- Troubleshoot and resolve installation conflicts, interferences and other problems.
- Support Show mechanical element operator and maintenance training as well as controls Test and Adjust.
- Work closely with other disciplines, including show mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, surface development, figure finish, show control engineers, show software engineers and programmer to make sure smoothly integration.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3+ years of experience in precision machinery fabrication, assembly, check out and installation related work.
- Ability to read and understand shop drawings and Solidworks.
- Advanced understanding of physical mechanics.
- Knowledge of Disney and industry QA/QC procedures and policies.
- Knowledge of Material and Welding Methods
- Working knowledge on mechanical and electrical systems
- Basic Carpentry skills
- Senior fitter certificate
- Advanced understanding of mechanism design and assemblies
- Proficiency with MS Office products (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
- Measurement to tight tolerance, cutting, machining and grinding skills
- Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical systems
- Knowledge and familiarity with relevant Industry Standards
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience in precision machinery fabrication, assembly, check out and installation related work in industries such as automotive, aircraft, or spacecraft manufacturing.
- Prior theme park or applicable industry design experience preferred.
- Basic welding skills including lay-up, tack and finish welds in TIG and MIG.
- Computer skills and CNC programming in G-code.
- 3D Modeling and Simulation.
- 3D Sketching capability.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD.
- Hands-on field installation experience.
- Knowledge of Hydraulics and Pneumatics system
- Familiar with basic electrical systems
EDUCATION:
- College degree in Mechanical Automation or equivalent degree required or equivalent work experience
