The operating rooms of VCU Medical Center and The Children’s Hospital of Richmond provide care 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. VCU Medical Center is the only Level 1 trauma center verified by the American College of Surgeons in Richmond, VA. Anesthesia Technicians at VCU Health provide support to Anesthesiologists and Nurse Anesthetists at over 70 anesthetizing sites within VCU Medical Center and The Children’s Hospital of Richmond. Anesthesia Technicians prepare equipment and supplies for surgical cases and procedures and provide support to the anesthesia care team.

The Anesthesia Technician assists in the OR suites and off-floor sites in administering patient care as directed by the Anesthesiologist. The anesthesia technician sets up, moves, prepares and maintains all anesthesia machines, equipment and supplies for the Anesthesiologist.

The Anesthesia Technician assists the Anesthesiologists with invasive and non-invasive monitoring. The Anesthesia Technician participates in the orientation, training and education of new personnel and maintains a safe and aseptic environment for all patients. This position performs all related duties as assigned and directed while adhering to the standards of nursing care and the policy and procedures of the Department of Anesthesiology.

The Anesthesia Technician reports certified Anesthesia Technician Supervisor and the Chief CRNA.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: One of the following certifications/licenses is required: Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: Current EMT-B; CMA; CCMA; or CNA required Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required Experience REQUIRED: Must be proficient in the English language One (1) year experience in health care. Experience PREFERRED: One (1) year clinical experience in one of the following areas: Recovery, ICU, Emergency Room, Operating Room, or Medical/Surgical Unit Education/training REQUIRED: High School diploma or equivalent; and Successful completion and certification/licensure in one of the following: EMT-Basic Program Medical Assistant program State recognized CNA program Education/training PREFERRED: Associates Degree or course work in biological sciences Independent action(s) required: Follows the anesthesia providers’ orders, standards and guidelines. This position requires a highly motivated, self-directed and conscientious individual capable of functioning in a stressful and fast paced environment with minimal supervision. This position requires excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills. Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contract with medication and related supplies.
