Job Description

The Mortgage Credit/Underwriting & Business Line Risk Leader, is a strategic leadership role responsible for executing the credit risk framework and underwriting strategies across the organization's mortgage portfolio, as well as providing oversight of the business line’s control activities and ensuring adherence to U.S. Bank’s Risk Management Framework, including risk appetite risk scorecard metrics and to all risk-related and departmental policies, process, and procedures. Reporting directly to Head of Mortgage, this role oversees the ongoing identification and assessment of the mortgage business material risks and key controls, working in partnership with the CBBP CRO, to ensure adherence to sound risk management practices, regulatory compliance, and business growth objectives are balanced while maintaining the integrity of the credit process.

Key Responsibilities

· Provide executive oversight of mortgage credit and underwriting policies and direct activities to monitor ongoing compliance with our risk management framework ensuring alignment with enterprise risk appetite and regulatory expectations.

· Lead key risk program accountabilities across Mortgage: issue management, audit and exam management, assurance programs, operational and technical resiliency, regulatory change management, model risk management, data risk governance, compliance risk management, risk profile and control design as well as SOX, FRRC and SOCR

· Strategic planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of business line risk and credit and underwriting standards for all mortgage products.

· Monitor portfolio performance, emerging risks, and market trends to recommend proactive risk mitigation strategies.

· Collaborate with product, sales, operations, compliance, and technology teams to drive business results while ensuring robust risk management.

· Lead the response to new regulations, market conditions, and internal policy changes, ensuring timely and effective operational adjustments.

· Drive innovation in risk analytics, credit technology, and process automation to enhance decision quality and operational efficiency

· Responsible for the identification and escalation of material risks and control deficiencies to the appropriate parties, including significant instances where risks

are not aligned with our Risk Appetite as well as significant instances of non-compliance with policy requirements.

· Ensure that appropriate actions are taken to evaluate root cause for adverse events, and to drive corrective actions to strengthen risk management practices or reduce risk across the enabling functions. 

· Ensure adherence to programs that are established to attract, develop, and retain the talent and staffing levels necessary to support U.S. Bank’s Risk Management Framework and Risk Appetite. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in mortgage credit, underwriting, and risk management roles, preferably within a large financial institution.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of mortgage products, credit risk assessment, underwriting practices, and regulatory requirements (e.g., CFPB, OCC, FHA, Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac guidelines).

  • Expert understanding of applicable laws, regulations, financial services, and regulatory trends that impact Mortgage

  • Highly skilled relationship and negotiation skills as well as strong ability to manage through crisis situations 

  • Exceptionally strong skills in leadership and management of process, projects, presentations and people 

  • Experience with credit risk modeling, data analytics, and technology solutions is highly desirable.

  • Exceptionally strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, planning and implementation skills 

  • Experience managing a large senior team 

  • Strong system skills (Microsoft 365)

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role. In addition to salary, U.S. Bank offers a comprehensive benefits package, including incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase 401(k) contribution and pension (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). Pay Range: $214,795.00 - $252,700.00
