The Opportunity

Reporting to the AVP, Head of Canada Expense Management, the Manager, Canada Segment Expenses is responsible for the implementation, maintenance and monitoring of monthly expenses, metric analysis and other expense accounting and reporting for Group Insurance business unit and functions assigned.

By using general expense expertise and business specific knowledge, the Expense Manager will provide analysis, accounting, and recommendations to their leader for reporting to senior management within the Canadian Segment as well as directly presenting these findings to the CFO, Group Insurance.  This includes developing appropriate expense processes, monthly reporting as well as forecasting and participating to the annual budget process. The incumbent’s role is part of the broader Expense Shared Service Center (ESSC) and will work with peers from the different global expense functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce standard expense reports according to the schedule.  Ensure quality and accuracy of data, reconciliations and adjustments as required.  Provide valuable analysis and clear, concise commentary on expense results.
  • Investigate expense headwinds/tailwinds and provide analysis of trends to assist with business decisions.
  • Collaborate with business and expense function peers to deliver forecasts and budgets. This includes working closely with the functional work area managers within the assigned business unit to identify expense risk and opportunities and recommend potential actions for the BU CFO and representatives.
  • Build relationships across business and expense functions and establish a high level of credibility.
  • Maintain high standards in interactions with Business and Finance clients.
  • Provide strong, proactive leadership and coaching to indirect reports and extended team of financial professionals.
  • Use appropriate judgment in dealing with unexpected issues and requests, demonstrating an ability to prioritize work.
  • Identify and recommend best practices, process, and controls as well as supporting the development of suitable reporting.
  • Provide necessary project support to advance the objectives of the ESSC.

What we are looking for

  • Accounting designation or working towards (CMA, CA, CGA, CPA) with 5+ years of relevant experience in progressive accounting roles
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or equivalent
  • Strong business acumen with ability to communicate complex financial concepts, analysis and results in a clear, concise, easy to understand manner including the ability to interact with senior leaders and representatives from BUs and functions
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and influence effectively
  • A comprehensive knowledge of reporting requirements, sound business practices and controls, and accounting principles which apply to financial companies and the area of expense management
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, particularly in the area of using sound, independent judgment, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to independently manage multiple, conflicting priorities and deliver a quality result within tight deadlines
  • Strong accounting and expense systems knowledge (e.g. Essbase, CERT)

Salary range is expected to be between

$84,375.00 CAD - $151,875.00 CAD
