Position Summary

The Town of Milton Community Services Department is currently accepting applications for the part-time seasonal positions of Aquatic Deck Supervisor. Reporting to the Coordinator, Aquatics, this part-time position is responsible for assisting with the coordination, supervision, safety and administration of comprehensive year round aquatic community recreation programs.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Ensures the delivery of quality Aquatics programs

  • Assist in providing a wide range of recreational and instructional aquatic programs and initiatives including but not limited to advanced lifesaving, adult lessons,  Aquafit, ICAN,  learn to swim and special events

  • Maintain confidential participant information and ensure staff is knowledgeable of same for the purposes of providing participant support

  • Ensure Lifeguards and Aquatic Instructors are assigned to programs to ensure compliance with regulations and to maximize program delivery

  • Ensure programs are being delivered to maximize space, equipment and provide the highest possible quality of program

  • Manage customer concerns and complaints and provide solutions to resolve problems in a timely manner and provide follow up

  • Provide registration support to participants in registered and drop-in programs, including facilitating level transfers, finding available program spaces, and educating participants in how to register/pre-book.

  • Assisting with adjustments to program delivery in response to sudden changes in programming (pool fouling, power outage, etc.)

  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines, Regulation 565 and the Occupational Heath and Safety Act

  • Oversees staff supervision, training and development

  • Assist with the training, supervision, evaluation and recognition of a large work unit including part-time program staff and volunteers

  • Evaluate performance of Lifeguards, Aquatic Instructors, and volunteers, and provide specific feedback for their ongoing coaching and development.

  • Provide mentoring opportunities for Aquatic Deck Supervisor candidates

  • Provide support and assistance to staff overseeing participants with exceptionalities and special needs

  • Assist in the implementation of ongoing specialized training to ensure compliance with all Town and departmental policies, procedures, and program standards

  • Assist in providing support to staff through training and regular meetings

  • Ensure all staff are in compliance with the Town fit for work policy and provide support when required

  • Completes administrative tasks required to support Aquatic programming

  • Assist in the development, maintenance and distribution of schedules, systems, and inventories for optimal program operations

  • Assist with maintaining appropriate statistical information for departmental reports and future planning

  • Inputting end-of-session activity outcomes for all participants on their shifts

  • Attending swimmers into Xplor Recreation when required

  • Prepare start of session paperwork including printing class lists, participant lists, worksheets, schematics

  • Maintain attendance records for staff

  • Prepare sessional evaluations for all staff on shift to be handed in to Aquatic Coordinator at end of session

  • Complete and submit Performance Notice Forms to Recreation Coordinator when further staff coaching or discipline is required

  • Complete all required checklists (Open/Close, First Aid, Slide, Climbing wall)

  • Complete and submit Quest 2 evaluations

Education & Experience

  • 2 years working in an Aquatic environment as a Lifeguard and Aquatic Instructor

  • Current National Lifeguard – Pool, holds Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross certification is required

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C”

  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim, Lifesaving and Emergency First Aid Instructor Certifications

  • Aquatic Supervisor Training certification or Aquatic Management Training certification

  • Current Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Screening required as a condition of employment

  • Experience working with children in a recreational setting is considered an asset

  • Experience working with persons with exceptionalities is considered an asset

  • HIGH FIVE Certification is preferred

  • Working knowledge of Lifesaving Society programs and standards, quality aquatic program standards, legislation surrounding public pool operations, and aquatic certifications and qualification requirements

  • Excellent public relations, communication, problem solving and inter-personal skills

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills

  • Ability to provide feedback for the purposes of coaching

  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Employment Standards Act

  • Mature judgment, diplomacy and discretion in handling of confidential material

  • Ability to work well independently as well as in a team environment
