PRN Registered Nurse (RN) - Post-Anesthesia Care Unit

Following surgery, patients are taken to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit where caregivers monitor their progress in recovering from the immediate effects of surgery and anesthesia. In the PACU, oxygen is routinely used upon arrival, patients are often asked to cough and breathe deeply, patients rate their pain on a scale of 0-10 and pain medication is sometimes given in small doses.
A caregiver in this position works varying shifts between 9:00AM – 10:00PM. PRN caregivers are required to work 48 hours in a 6-week schedule.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Provide direct nursing care.
Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for a given patient population.
Assessments: complete ongoing assessments, recognize changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.
Planning: develop and update goals, involve patients and families in developing plans of care, coordinating the interdisciplinary plan of care and serve as a patient advocate.
Implementation: provide nursing care, administer treatments and medication, and document.
Evaluation: participate in ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation of patient/family outcomes, contribute to the improvement of care and participate in the quality improvement process.
Leadership/professional development: delegate tasks/assignments, serve as a resource person/role model/mentor, pursue ongoing education and specialty certifications, maintain applicable certification/licensure and obtain any required certifications specific to the unit.
Department specific duties: assess patient status, communicate and document pertinent information regarding patient condition and changes in condition, prioritize patient care needs, perform in a calm and professional manner during crisis or emergencies, learn new routines quickly, and develop, document and provide comprehensive discharge planning and teaching for patients and families.
Successfully complete Akron General and PACU RN orientation programs.
Complete/pass all mandated programs as required by policy and unit-based competencies/skills assessments.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.
Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN).
