About the Team

The Clumio Platform team designs, builds, and operates the core SaaS platform that underpins all Clumio data protection solutions, as well as industry’s first data protection solution for Apache Iceberg on AWS. For many customers, backup is not a “nice-to-have” capability, but a foundational requirement driven by compliance, audit, and security mandates. In these environments, recovery performance, cost efficiency, and reliable operation at scale are key differentiators.

The platform is designed to protect, back up, and recover large volumes of cloud data using a cloud-native architecture. The control and management plane scales dynamically based on workload characteristics such as the number of protected assets and the volume of events processed. A shared platform abstracts complexity from the underlying data management layer, enabling a consistent and seamless experience across supported data sources.

Beyond core backup and recovery, the platform provides essential non-backup capabilities including customer onboarding, metering and billing, reporting, alerting, and machine-learning-driven insights that enable customers to make smarter, cost-effective decisions about data protection. The team operates a mature, production-proven platform on AWS and is actively expanding into multi-cloud data protection across GCP and Azure.

Role Overview

As a Principal Engineer on the Clumio Platform team, you serve as a technical leader in the control and management plane of the cloud-native data protection platform. Reporting to the Engineering Director, this role combines hands-on engineering with architectural leadership, shaping systems that are foundational to customer data protection and recovery.

You own and drive cross-cutting technical initiatives that span multiple services and define core platform capabilities across shared services such as control planes, policy management, and operational services. This includes designing and evolving platform abstractions, making architectural decisions that balance correctness, cost, scalability, and operational simplicity, and leading the execution of complex projects from design through production rollout. You are responsible for setting technical direction and ensuring that architectural decisions are realized in high-quality production systems.

You remain deeply hands-on, spending significant time writing and reviewing code, solving complex technical problems, and participating in production operations. You work closely with Senior Engineers, Product, and Customer Success teams to guide designs, incorporate operational and customer feedback, and establish technical patterns that allow the platform to scale and evolve across multiple cloud environments.

Basic Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant ownership of complex production systems.
• Proven experience leading ambiguous, high-impact technical initiatives from problem definition through production delivery.
• Strong ability to translate business, customer, and operational needs into clear technical requirements and system designs.
• Deep experience designing and evolving distributed or cloud-native systems with a focus on correctness, operability, and cost efficiency.
• Experience making high-impact architectural decisions and communicating trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Working knowledge of English.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience serving as the senior technical owner for a team or platform while remaining hands-on.
• Experience designing systems that span multiple services or cloud environments, including defining common abstractions and patterns.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Background in data management, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, or related data protection domains.
• Experience with platform capabilities such as reporting, alerting, metering, billing, task orchestration, audit logging, policy management, or AI/ML.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers and shaping technical direction in collaboration with engineering and product leadership.
