SUMMARY OF MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The New Product Development Tool and Die Designer performs work on the design and creation of prototype components, tools, and dies. The primary duty is to support the development and introduction of new products. This position will collaborate with tool and die makers, quality, design and production engineers, and other team members to ensure designs meet specifications. Additional responsibilities may include CAD design, inspection, press operation, process development, VAVE / Continuous Improvement activities, and capital equipment selection and planning.

REPORTING TO: Manager, NPD Engineering

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, fabricate, and operate prototype tool and dies used for stamping, bending, forming sheet metal.
  • Collaborate with engineering to create 3D CAD models and drawings of prototype and production part drawings.
  • Collaborate with third party machine building companies to verify design for manufacturing (DFM).
  • Provide cost and timeline estimates and select/purchase raw materials for fabrication work.
  • Machine and modify prototype components primarily from steel based on engineering drawings and/or CAD models using a variety of technique and equipment including CNC mills, EDM machines, CNC lathes, manual lathes, milling machines and surface grinders.
  • Perform visual, dimensional, and material inspections using metrology and other precision equipment in a lab setting.
  • Assemble, operate, troubleshoot custom test equipment, and clamp installation tools.
  • Collaborate with Product Engineering, Quality Engineering, Operations, Machinists, and third parties. This may include DFM reviews, work on VA/VE and continuous improvement projects, investigating capital equipment, developing, and documenting processes for high volume production of sheet metal components.
  • Write CAM programs for CNC mills, CNC lathes, and wire EDM machines. 
  • Communicate with various levels of the organization necessary to projects.
  • Consistently comply with applicable Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) regulations, policies, and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND REQUIRED ABILITIES:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform this job successfully. 

  • Strong understanding of DFM.
  • Experience in or ability to develop a prototype die from concept to production.
  • Ability to design dies that are adaptable and efficient for small-run production with an understanding of how to incorporate iterative changes.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks or other CAD software.
    • Ability to read and interpret drawings/design intent, technical instructions, codes, standards and specifications, GD&T experience preferred.
    • Exceptional understanding of engineering principles including mechanical properties of materials.
    • Experience with metrology equipment.
    • Experience with Esprit and/or CAMWorks software. 
  • Knowledge of progressive dies, 4/multi slide machines, and metal forming operations.
  • Experience working with CMMS (computerized maintenance management software) to document work and asset history.
  • Working knowledge of various metals, lubricants, and industrial materials. 
  • Knowledge of good manufacturing practices. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.). 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Attention to detail.
  • Experience operating presses and other manufacturing equipment in a high volume manufacturing facility.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Tool and Die Journeyman or advanced technical school training.
  • 5+ years of experience with machining, stamping die design and manufacturing, and/or repair/troubleshooting.
  • Advanced level operation and troubleshooting of CNC machines and machining operations.

Total Rewards

The compensation range for this position is $81,400.00 - $122,200.00, depending on experience. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
