Job Description Summary:
Responsible for the accurate and efficient performance of work assignments in the histology section of the laboratory, including quality control and instrument maintenance. Skills and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques in the field of histology. Such proficiency is usually acquired through completion of a histology program in an ASCP accredited school or on the job training with 1-2 years of experience in histology. Under the direct supervision of the Histology Manager/Manager, Lab Operations, responsible for the work performed for the assigned shift as scheduled. Incumbents are subject to overtime and call back by the department as designated by the hospital.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Reviews results of all tests reported in a laboratory section and evaluates for validity and completeness.
- Reviews quality control and maintenance logs and provides assistance in resolving problems of instrument malfunction and unacceptable quality control findings.
- Orders reagents and supplies for laboratory section.
- Prepares personnel shift and work assignment schedule for laboratory section, in the absence of supervisor; authorizes overtime and time off.
- Prepares and maintains current procedure manuals for the laboratory section and maintains a current department policy manual.
- Interviews prospective employees, trains new employees, evaluates work performance, and recommends promotion or dismissal of those personnel under his or her direct supervision; participates in department supervisory meetings.
- Evaluates, recommends, and establishes new procedures, reagents, and equipment for laboratory section.
- Participates in preparation of department personnel and equipment budgets.
- Consults with technical representatives about problems with reagents, supplies, or instruments, and data on new products.
- Obtains specimens from patients for laboratory procedures.
- Develops and maintains a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
- Pour-over and transport hazardous flammable waste (alcohols, xylene, and stains) to the hazardous waste drum collection area on the lab dock as needed (RCRA Hazardous Waste Management for Generators Certification required).
- Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
- Assess competency of each person performing patient testing to perform his/her assigned duties.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
- Skills and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques in the field of histology. Such proficiency is usually acquired through completion of a histology program in an ASCP accredited school or on the job training with 3 years of histology experience.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
- ASCP certification in Histology preferred but not required
EXPERIENCE:
- General knowledge of laboratory procedures, specific knowledge of section procedures, and demonstrated ability to perform in a supervisory capacity as normally acquired through 3 years of medical laboratory experience as a histology tech.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Skills and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques in the field of histology. Such proficiency is usually acquired through completion of a histology program in an ASCP accredited school or the equivalent. On the job training with prior experience is considered.
