Job Summary:
The Lead Radiation Therapist in the Radiation Oncology Department applies ionizing radiation to a diverse population of patients in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist. They must be capable of operating radiation-producing equipment utilizing radiation safety measures, and be able to perform a series of complex and precise technical procedures. The lead therapist will also manage day to day operations in the clinical setting and be able to run reports and keep track of productivity within department and with staff. They will supervise the other therapists as well as schedule and evaluate those staff members in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Participates in Quality Control monitoring.
* Delivers consistent precise therapy to a designated treatment area.
* Demonstrates skill in patient assessment, performing procedures and giving specialty care to patients, considering the age of the patient and appropriately adopts care for age (adolescent, adult and geriatrics).
* Documents appropriately in Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
* Demonstrates a willingness to perform additional tasks and gives assistance when necessary to others.
* Recognizes own limitations and/or needs and seeks assistance as needed.
* Reports adverse reactions to physician immediately and follows policy and procedure (P/P) for documentation.
* Educates patient/family on expected side effects, use of blocks, wedges and other treatment aids.
* Follows P/P to ensure precise treatment per physician prescription.
* Follows P/P to ensure precise treatment per physicists instruction in chart or computer.
* Runs reports on portal/XVI image acceptance and other QI data to share with manager.
Supervisory and clinical competencies
* Will do other tasks as assigned
* Participates in on-call rotation
* Is active as a student clinical instructor with both RTT and RTR students. Will evaluate and give feedback to both students and Clinical Advisor.
* Will be responsible for completing daily orders given by physician within department.
* Will coordinate the days activities with physician and staff
* Report to manager any problems or complaints from staff and visitors.
* Will be a department liaison with the hospital for technical questions.
* Will assist in keeping track of time for therapists in department
* Will help maintain clinical department budget of operations and also assist in capital budget itemizing
* Will supervise therapists in following departmental policy and procedures as well as evaluating them on their clinical rotations and competencies
* Will run needed reports for financial assessment when requested
* Evaluates clinical patient load and appropriate staffing of department
Understands and completes correctly all patient set-ups
* Simulates new patients and/or patients with new treatment fields with no errors and according to physicians written order in EMR.
* Assess daily schedule and schedules patients appropriately and always lets patient know of any changes prior to changes being made.
* Trains new employees on correct set-ups and monitors their progress in simulation as well as on machines.
Follows proper procedure to ensure safety to self and patient.
* Assesses mobility of patients and manages accordingly, looks at EMR for fall precautions.
* Wears radiation safety badges at all times.
* Practices universal precautions.
* Participates in daily warm-up procedures to ensure output is within tolerances
* Advises manager of any discrepancies and any material item that needs replaced or fixed as soon as possible
* Takes care of service recovery items that patient or family may have
Performs other duties as assigned
Complies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education:
Associate's Degree graduate of designated radiation therapy program
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
- ARRT-T - ARRT Radiation Therapy
- BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor
Additional License(s) and Certification(s):
Required Minimum Experience:
Minimum 5 years experience in Radiation Therapy. Required
Required Minimum Skills:
Demonstrates ability to treat/simulate patients.
