WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE JOB:
The work location for this position is 100% virtual/work from home. While the position can be worked from anywhere in the United States, the preferred work hours are on an East Coast schedule.  
 

The Innovation Engineer is a hands-on technical contributor who designs, develops, and prototypes innovative solutions that meet user needs and advance organizational goals. This role combines software development expertise with a passion for exploring emerging technologies and building physical prototypes. The position requires creativity, adaptability, and collaboration across teams to bring ideas from concept to reality.

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE FOR GOOD (Key Responsibilities):

Design and Develop Innovative Solutions

  • Write and implement code for new and existing technologies using diverse tools and frameworks.
  • Build and test physical prototypes that integrate hardware and software components.
  • Align solutions with organizational strategies and customer requirements.

Explore Emerging Technologies

  • Research, evaluate, and experiment with new technologies, platforms, and methodologies.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and assess feasibility for implementation.

Data Engineering and Best Practices

  • Design and implement robust data pipelines using ETL/ELT methodologies.
  • Apply best practices for data transformation and modeling using tools such as DBT.
  • Ensure data integrity, scalability, and performance across innovation projects.

Test and Troubleshoot

  • Diagnose, isolate, and resolve technical issues across software and hardware prototypes.
  • Perform quality assurance and document findings to ensure reliability and scalability.

Collaborate and Share Expertise

  • Provide technical guidance and training to team members and stakeholders.
  • Contribute expertise to cross-functional innovation projects.

Requirements and Documentation

  • Gather and analyze user and technical requirements for innovative solutions.
  • Maintain documentation for prototypes, code libraries, and technical processes.
  • Prepare reports and metrics related to innovation initiatives.

Deployment and Support

  • Plan and execute deployment of new technologies and prototypes.
  • Support disaster recovery and operational continuity as needed.

Scope

Individual contributor with deep technical knowledge and creative problem-solving skills. Works independently and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams. May coach other professionals on emerging technologies and prototyping techniques.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (required/minimum qualifications):
 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field required or equivalent work experience.
Experience: Minimum 4 years of experience in software development, prototyping, or technology innovation.
 

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, JavaScript).

  • Experience with hardware integration, IoT, or rapid prototyping tools (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, 3D printing).

  • Experience in Data Engineering, including ETL/ELT processes and DBT for data modeling and transformation.

  • Strong problem-solving and creative thinking skills.

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.

Travel: At least quarterly travel required for innovation workshops, engagements, and field testing.

PAY INFORMATION:
The annual salary range for this position is $110K - $125K. We do not offer an annual bonus for this role.

Note that American Red Cross salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location in which the work is primarily performed. Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role. **We will review specific salary information at the time of phone screening based upon your location & experience.**

This job will be posted for a minimum of five business days and extended if the applicant pool needs to be expanded.
