Nurse Manager – Emergency Department

Akron General’s Emergency Department is a Level I trauma center that offers the technology, expertise, and staffing to treat all injuries regardless of severity. A caregiver in this position works 7:00am – 5:00pm.  

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Manage the practice of professional nursing and delivery of nurse care on an assigned unit. 

  • Establish clinical direction for nursing care delivery, provide clinical supervision and maintain quality outcomes. 

  • Collaborate with liaison departments in maintaining patient care standards. 

  • Identify and resolve issues affecting the delivery of patient care services in a unit. 

  • Develop quality initiatives and implement policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective delivery of health services. 

  • Develop and maintain unit related patient care standards through continuous quality improvement. 

  • Maintain Joint Commission and other regulatory standards. 

  • Manage the operation of unit. 

  • Analyze personnel structure, determine staffing needs and mix. 

  • Provide direction and supervision, evaluate performance, conduct selection and termination processes and develop strategic plans. 

  • Actively promote caregiver and self-development. 

  • Participate in clinical nursing research and support foundation research activities. 

  • Direct unit participation in the evaluation of new products. 

  • Approve purchases and establish or revise inventory quotes. 

  • Assist in the development and monitoring of budget. 

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN).  

  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).  

  • Three years of recent clinical nursing experience including at least one year of healthcare management experience. 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA). 

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire or within one year of employment.  

  • Completion of a Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC – adult) or Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC – pediatric) upon hire or within 24 months of employment.  

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Master’s degree in nursing (MSN).  

  • Leadership experience in an adult inpatient/acute care setting.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye and hand coordination.
  • Requires frequent data entry, sitting, standing and walking.
  • Requires corrective vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
