Job Description Summary:

JOB SUMMARY/SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Responsible for responding to the medical-forensic needs of sexual assault survivors at West Tennessee Healthcare Emergency Departments.

  • Successfully completes training at a recognized SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program.

  • Completes competency checklist.

  • Follows guidelines for the program. Participates in documentation and evaluation process with SANE coordinators/leaders.

  • Assures all activities performed adhere to established SANE guidelines, as set forth by the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN). This exam, at its broadest, is composed of the medical-forensic history, a detailed physical and emotional assessment, written/electronic and photographic documentation, collection and management of forensic samples, and providing emotional and social support and resources to survivors and family (as appropriate).  The SANE testifies in legal proceedings related to the medical-forensic evaluation. Ensures the integrity of the forensic samples and the proper chain of custody for evidence admissibility in court.

  • Maintains close working relationship with SANE coordinators and members of other disciplines in the care of sexual assault survivors. These may include: advocates, law enforcement, crime lab personnel, child and vulnerable adult services and attorneys. These professionals are also striving to promote that the response is victim-centered and compassionate, leading toward a successful criminal justice response.

  • Maintains equipment and supplies in examination room after use.

  • Maintains records and statistics, as appropriate.

  • Takes on-call shifts as scheduled, responding, by phone, within 15 minutes of initial call, and communicating physical response time to ER.

  • Submits on-call availability to SANE coordinator or manager to facilitate on-call scheduling.

  • Maintains personal contact information with the program for 1 year following separation from the SANE program and responds to any and all subpoenas for cases examined while participating with the SANE program.

  • Assists with the development, implementation, training, evaluation, and maintenance of all SANE projects as necessary. 

  • Coordinates and conducts orientation and ongoing education programs for personnel providing direct patient care.  

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Employee is subject to call back as required by the hospital

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • ASN required.   Must have skills and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of the healthcare profession.  Such proficiency is acquired through completion of a degree in nursing or other allied healthcare profession.  

  • Completion of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training by a recognized program.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.

  • BLS required

EXPERIENCE:

  •  Two years experience in nursing. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Maintains basic SANE-related competencies required by WTH within the SANE nursing role. This includes participation in yearly training, by helping instruct new nurses. Also, maintain CEUs required for renewing certification, if and when the RN obtains certification for SANE-A. Working knowledge of all OSHA safety and health standards relevant to the position and job duties.

  • Ability to plan and organize work autonomously.

  • Liaison with other human service agencies, clients, personnel and individuals in related programs.

  • Demonstrates initiative, resourcefulness and good judgment in executing the role and responsibilities of a nurse examiner.

  • Performs highly complex and varied tasks requiring independent knowledge, its application to a variet of situations, as well as exercise of independent judgment.

  • Must have the ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines, criteria and procedures.

  • Must be able to write, spell, understand and apply rules of grammar and punctuation and to edit and supervise his/her own work.

  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form.
