Upon successful completion of a Wellstar approved surgical technologist on-line training program and receiving the National Center of Competency Testing (NCCT) TS-C provisional certification, a team member can become a Surgical Technologist Trainee. A Surgical Technologist Trainee must successfully complete 125 surgical cases during the hands-on clinical training, as well as career readiness preparation within 12 months of receiving provisional certification. The Surgical Technologist Trainee will receive training through classroom and clinical sessions that will develop skills in communication, interpersonal skills, infection control, safety, and preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment while being vigilant for the maintenance of the sterile field and other patient safety concerns. In addition, the trainee will learn how to gather required instruments, supplies, and how to ensure that the unit is compliant with Joint Commission standards at all times. Trainee should successfully pass NCCT TS-C certification exam upon completion of training program.
Learn the proper techniques and demonstrate knowledge, skill and ability of the procedure being performed and anticipating the needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare team as defined by the scope of anatomy, equipment, and instrumentation of the case. This training will include:
* Checking supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure which includes review and utilization of appropriate preference card.
* Assisting with room set-up to include opening of sterile supplies.
* Setting up a sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions (in conjunction with an RN) needed for procedure in an accurate, aseptically prioritized, and timely manner, including reviewing and utilizing appropriate preference cards.
* Performing appropriate surgical counts with circulating RN.
* Participating in the pre-procedure, pre-incision, and debrief.
* How to scrub, gown, and glove, as well as assisting others with gowning and gloving.
* Assisting in draping a sterile field.
* Passing instruments to surgeon during the procedure and maintaining an organized back table and operative field. This also includes being able to anticipate needs.
* Maintaining highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
* Preparing sterile dressings.
* Participating in debrief which includes accounting repairing instruments for terminal sterilization, taking initiative to inform SPD of critical need instruments.
* Applying principles of asepsis to ensure the prevention of infection and safety of patients and employees
* Assisting clinical coordinator with preparation for future cases.
* Observing patients condition and immediately reporting any changes or significant findings to the physician and Registered Nurse.
* Proactively planning for the next steps in the progression of procedure as needed.
* Preparing OR room and other areas (as needed) for receiving patients, which includes stocking, cleaning equipment or storage areas, turning OR room over, preparing instruments for future procedures, notifying of specialty staff regarding needed instrumentation or equipment.
* Maintaining a financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment, only opening required supplies until requested by the surgeon.
Learn the proper techniques and demonstrate competency on how to assist the health care team in providing safe, age appropriate and culturally aware patient care. This training will include:
* Understanding relationship-based patient centered care that is consistent with population specific characteristics (e.g. age, gender, disease, etc.) in a manner that adapts service delivery to reflect an understanding of cultural diversity under supervision of the registered nurse.
* Practicing using current clinical practice standards under the supervision of the registered nurse.
* Understanding the importance of upholding all health care system/organizational policies and procedures and clinical competencies put forth by this job description including legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements and standards ensuring by way of example, such as goals as TJC Patient Safety Goals and Wellstar Health Systems safety absolutes.
* Supporting evidence-based practice and ethical accountability.
* Demonstrating teamwork and collaboration by practicing in a manner that is fiscally responsible and promotes the recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members.
* Serving as patient advocate including patient care and safety.
* Preparing and cleaning the room.
* Transporting patients.
* Appropriately providing comfort and safety measures for specific aged patients.
