Data Engineer

Job Description:

Technology is at the heart of Disney’s past, present, and future. Disney Entertainment and ESPN Product & Technology is a global organization of engineers, product developers, designers, technologists, data scientists, and more – all working to build and advance the technological backbone for Disney’s media business globally.

The team marries technology with creativity to build world-class products, enhance storytelling, and drive velocity, innovation, and scalability for our businesses. We are Storytellers and Innovators. Creators and Builders. Entertainers and Engineers. We work with every part of The Walt Disney Company’s media portfolio to advance the technological foundation and consumer media touch points serving millions of people around the world.

Here are a few reasons why we think you’d love working here:

  • Building the future of Disney’s media: Our Technologists are designing and building the products and platforms that will power our media, advertising, and distribution businesses for years to come.
  • Reach, Scale & Impact: More than ever, Disney’s technology and products serve as a signature doorway for fans' connections with the company’s brands and stories. Disney+. Hulu. ESPN. ABC. ABC News…and many more. These products and brands – and the unmatched stories, storytellers, and events they carry – matter to millions of people globally.
  • Innovation: We develop and implement groundbreaking products and techniques that shape industry norms, and solve complex and distinctive technical problems.

Role Overview

We’re hiring Data Engineers across all experience levels—including individual contributor and leadership roles—to design, build, and evolve reliable, scalable data pipelines and platforms that power analytics, data products, and ML use cases across Disney. You’ll model data for clarity and performance, orchestrate robust batch/streaming pipelines, and deliver trusted, discoverable datasets that drive insight and decision‑making. Depending on level, you may implement pipelines and tables, own domain‑level data models and SLAs, or set technical direction and mentor engineers across multiple teams.

*Throughout the recruitment process we will evaluate your skills and experience to determine level placement.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain reliable batch and streaming data pipelines to ingest, transform, and publish data from diverse sources into curated, query‑efficient datasets.
  • Define schemas and dimensional/normalized models that support analytics, data products, and ML, emphasizing clarity, lineage, and performance.
  • Implement automated data quality checks, validation rules, and monitoring/alerting to uphold SLAs and ensure trusted downstream consumption.
  • Use workflow/orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow) and CI/CD to schedule, deploy, and operate pipelines and jobs with strong observability and cost awareness.
  • Tune SQL and compute frameworks to optimize cost and latency; profile queries, partitioning, and caching for target workloads and SLAs.
  • Partner with platform, security, and privacy teams to align with data governance, PII handling, and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with data product managers, analysts, data scientists, and domain owners to translate requirements into well‑designed data solutions.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field—or equivalent experience.
  • SQL skills with experience building analytical datasets and optimizing complex queries on large‑scale data.
  • Programming proficiency in one or more languages used in data engineering (e.g., Python, Scala) and familiarity with testing and code reviews.
  • Data modeling fundamentals (dimensional modeling, normalization) and schema design for analytics and data products.
  • Hands‑on experience with pipelines & orchestration (e.g., Airflow or similar) and comfort with CI/CD and Git‑based workflows.
  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake/Redshift/BigQuery; Spark/Databricks/EMR) and storage/compute trade‑offs.
  • Mindset for observability and data quality (monitoring, lineage, data quality checks) with a track record of building reliable, maintainable pipelines.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with experience working in Agile/iterative environments.
  • Candidates with foundational experience in SQL, pipelines, and scripting are encouraged to apply.
