Amentum, a global leader in advanced engineering, technical, and professional services serving the US government, allies and critical infrastructure sectors, is seeking a Port Control Tower Watch to support unique US Navy program based on the island of Diego Garcia.
The Port Controller is responsible for assigning docking and mooring spaces and maintaining navigable channels to ensure the safe and orderly flow of boating traffic in a harbor.
Principal Accountabilities
(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)
- Assists in the enforcement of marine ordinances and studies
- Operates the communication nets for all marine traffic
- Ensures all logbooks and records are properly maintained
- Prepares reports of harbor activities
- Records movements of all vessels in and out of the harbor
- Communicates times of departures
- Arranges requests for emergency assistance
- Maintains orderly and safe boating conditions and enforces local marine ordinances
- Supervises the maintenance of markers, buoys, floats, etc., and submits requisitions for the purchase of harbor equipment
- Assigns mooring spaces to power and sail boats
- Surveys and records the number, size and types of boats using harbor facilities
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Knowledge & Skills
- Thorough knowledge of the operational and maintenance requirements of harbor facilities and equipment
- Possesses good knowledge of nautical calculations and terminology
- Ability to plan and supervise the activities of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, boat operators, and passengers
- Ability to enforce local marine ordinances with tact and firmness
- Ability to work outdoors in warm and rainy environment
Experience & Education
- Four (4) years of experience in law enforcement, marine conservation, marine construction, marine transportation, marine maintenance, commercial fishing or as a merchant or United States Navy seaman
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Marine Conservation, Marine Transportation, Marine Maintenance or a related field from an accredited college or university preferred
- Possession of a current United States Coast Guard Master’s license preferred
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
- Must meet physical requirements including but not limited to, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, negotiating uneven and moving surfaces
- Living and working conditions at the assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable
- Long hours, exposure to weather and hazardous conditions
- Personnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditions
