The Manager Tax Planning role develops, executes and advises on Canadian transactions, including mergers, acquisitions and organic growth projects. In this role, you will carry out complex tax research, including emerging Canadian tax laws to ensure a full understanding of the financial impact on the company as well as impact on transactions and existing planning.

What You Will Do:

  • Actively engages as a subject matter authority on Corporate Development Office initiatives, including organic growth projects, internal reorganizations, M&A activity and economic modelling of transactions. This requires a solid understanding of the tax law as it applies to Canadian Corporations, the ability to model and recommend alternative solutions, and to clearly and succinctly communicate complex ideas. Brings value by delivering quality, timely and reliable advice.

  • Leads and or supports Department initiatives including but not limited to efficient corporate structures, financing, repatriation, and cash tax management. This requires strong tax planning skills, a solid understanding of the applicable tax law and tax authority assessing policies, good judgment, the ability to model alternative solutions, and make reliable recommendations

  • Carries out varied and sophisticated tax research, including ad-hoc advice across the organization. Competently translates research into recommendations supported by well-written technical memorandums.

  • Proactively supports the tax controversy function; ensuring transactions are aligned with tax risk philosophy, transactions have audit-ready support, and actively engages on supporting tax positions during the audit process.

  • Actively monitors and anticipates changes in tax law and assessing policies. Analyses proposed legislation and its potential impact on the organization. Considers both opportunities and mitigating actions. Participates in tax advocacy whether directly or through industry groups.

  • Collaborates proactively with the Tax Reporting function to ensure tax consequences of M&A and other tax planning transactions are understood and adequately disclosed in budgets, forecasts, and financial documents.

  • Promotes learning and development through active sharing of expertise and professional experience. Leads, contributes to and participates in tax development workshops and learning sessions across the organization.
     

Who You Are:

Required:

  • Minimum 10 years tax experience working in a corporate tax role or relatable experience

  • Accounting designation (CPA) or Bachelor of Laws with experience in tax planning: Completion of the CPA In-Depth tax course.

  • Strong tax technical experience and tax planning/research skills as they relate to Canadian income tax law.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with regards to income tax reporting and financial accounting.

  • High Proficiency in Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, detail oriented, resourceful, strategic thinker.

  • Ability to work independently and within a collaborative team environment, to lead multiple projects simultaneously, and in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proven experience working with cross functional teams, tax advisors, and tax authority auditors.
     

Preferred:

  • Experience advising on application of Canadian clean energy tax incentives to projects.

  • Experience structuring projects with First Nations.

  • Completion of CPA Corporate Reorganization course would be advantageous.

  • US and International taxation knowledge beneficial but not required.

Physical Requirements include but are not limited to:

Grasping, kneeling, light – moderate lifting (objects up to 20 pounds), reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, typing, sitting, standing, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement and the ability to sit at a computer for long periods of time.
