Job Summary
The Ophthalmic Assistant supports the delivery of high-quality patient care in an outpatient ophthalmology setting. Working under the supervision of a licensed clinician, this role performs clinical testing, imaging, patient assessments, and procedural support, while also assisting with administrative responsibilities that help ensure an efficient and positive patient experience.

Essential Functions
-Performs vision and ocular testing, imaging, and assessments to prepare patients for comprehensive eye examinations.
-Identifies and administers diagnostic eye drops as part of routine examinations and as directed by the clinician.
-Prepares for and assists with minor ophthalmic procedures, including injections and cryotherapy, under the supervision of the ophthalmologist.
-Obtains and documents vital signs as needed for procedures and patient care.
-Ensures exam rooms are appropriately stocked with necessary medical and ophthalmic supplies.
-Cleans, calibrates, and performs basic maintenance of ophthalmic equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and infection control standards.
-Properly handles, stores, and transports specimens, instruments, and medications.
-Supports administrative functions, including patient call triage and in-basket management, as assigned.
-Provides cross-coverage for other ophthalmology services and locations as needed.
-Follows hospital policies and applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as Joint Commission standards.

Experience
Experience in an ophthalmology, healthcare, or related clinical setting preferred; 0–1 year of experience welcomed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology, or the ability to learn and apply new terminology.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and families.
- Ability to provide age-appropriate care and support based on patients’ individual needs.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to changing needs, and work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume clinical environment.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians, clinicians, and other members of the care team.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to make appropriate decisions within the scope of the role.
- Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, or the ability to learn new systems and technology.
