Managing Director, Performance & Risk, Office of Chief Investment Officer – SLC Management

WHAT IS IN IT FOR YOU

Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer (CIO), Sun Life, the Managing Director, Performance & Risk, Office of the CIO will be tasked with assessing investment risk and performance of the assets SLF has invested.

Given the nature of the CIO, Sun Life position, and the connectivity and leadership accountabilities to both Sun Life Financial (SLF) and SLC Management (SLC), this role will be responsible for working closely with the internal SLF and SLC teams to complete the following:

  • Support the CIO, Sun Life in understanding the nuances of the investment performance of SLF assets
  • Be responsible for evaluating the performance and assessing the risk of SLF assets
  • Consistently gathering data, aggregating and heat mapping
  • Oversee an Associate Director, Performance & Risk (1 direct report).

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Pro-actively keep up to date with current industry approved standards related to the calculation and presentation of the firm’s investment performance using current knowledge and internal and external resources available 
  • Assess metrics, returns, fees, performance attribution, exposure, and risk analytics for mandates and benchmarks for the General Account. 
  • Collaborate with staff across the enterprise, including other members of the Office of the CIO and the SLC regarding the delivery of the General Account performance for various Board reviews, validating that it complies with the current standards and that it aligns with the SLF’s desired mandate 
  • Be responsible for continuously collating exposures and aggregating information into risk buckets through the various SLF resources.
  • Evaluate and assess risk exposures by attributes and factors, and provide expert consultation to the CIO, Sun Life
  • Manage multiple initiatives simultaneously to facilitate achievement of SLF & SLC Management’s strategic and operational performance goals.
  • Establish and maintain a schedule of reporting deliverables in satisfaction of various deadlines for monthly, quarterly, yearly and Board reporting requirements.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED:

  • MBA, CFA or advanced degree preferred
  • 10+ years of asset management and investment experience, investment performance, measurement, attribution, an/or compliance
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable global securities legislation and insurance regulations
  • Analytical and a data driven decision-making mindset
  • Strong communicator with exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to think outside of the box and apply quantitative and qualitative information and knowledge to complex situations in order to resolve them
  • Big picture thinker – ability to think strategically and creatively to help grow the business over the long-term and through changing environment; also able to navigate the detail to ensure flawless execution.
  • Excellent project management abilities, including creating timelines, budgets and reports
  • Operates with a high level of integrity. Knows what information is sensitive and maintains discretion and confidentiality

Salary Range

142,000/142 000 - 250,000/250 000

The Base Pay range is for the primary location of the job.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
