The Opportunity
As a SME for the adoption and implementation of GS1 global standards, this role provides technical/process guidance and leadership on adoption and implementation of GS1 global standards, which are used by all Abbott businesses for all Abbott products, to meet regulatory and customer requirements, e.g., US FDA UDI Rule, EU MDR/IVDR, healthcare provider/retailer requests, and customer EDI adoption using GLNs/GTINs. GS1 SENIOR CONSULTANT coordinates and leads major cross-divisional, multi-country initiatives that address industry and compliance requirements. Maintains relationships with key leaders internally (Regulatory, Supply Chain, Customer Service, Customer Master, etc.) and externally (GS1, Regulators, Industry Associations, etc.) organizations to collaborate with and influence these industry stakeholders and regulators in the adoption and implementation of standards.
What You’ll Work On
This position reports to the Director in the Global Standards and Serialization Office.
Training and Education - Develop, implement and maintain a curriculum of GS1 training materials related to GS1 Standards adoption and compliance. Provide the appropriate training and education in various media forms as needed on a global basis.
Maintaining Relationships-
- Actively engage with GS1 US and GS1 Global organizations.
- Maintain relationships with GS1 staff members, thought leaders and supply chain partners while assisting less seasoned staff members in establishing their GS1 relationships.
- Maintain internal relationships with senior staff members and management across the enterprise, including but not limited to the Regulatory, Quality, Manufacturing Ops, Commercial, Customer Service, Supply Chain, and Information Technology organizations.
This individual is expected to function with minimal supervision and perform the following:
- Business process owner for the adoption of EDI by customers using GLNs/GTINs.
- Program Management for GS1 and UDI related activities – US FDA UDI Rule, EU MDR/IVDR, and emerging UDI requirements around the globe.
- Responsible for overall successful implementation of GS1 Standards across divisional/global boundaries – barcoding, UDI regulation.
- This position will function primarily through influence rather than authority. The position will interact with multiple levels across the Enterprise and will be required to hold the organization accountable for implementation of GS1-related regulations and requirements.
- Responsible for the implementation of training and education plans that keep the entire supply chain audience up-to-date on GS1 standards and in compliance with approved policies and procedures around GS1 standards.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional policies and procedure.
- Accountable for program budget spend and timely deliverables.
- Performs related duties as assigned or requested by director of GSSO.
Minimum Experience & Education Required:
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Science plus 10+ years of related work experience in the life science industry, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. The incumbent must possess general depth and breadth with GS1 standards.
- 10+ years of experience with a minimum of 6 years managing projects, including 3+ years of combined leadership experience in multi-divisional or cross-functional projects.
- 3+ years of experience running multiple projects simultaneously.
- Expertise in Global GS1 standards.
- 2+ years of experience with US FDA UDI.
- Deep understanding of the health/life science industry.
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office tools (Visio, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook).
- Quantitative and analytical thinking
- Strong capabilities in relationship, client management and strategic thinking.
- Provide leadership for implementation guidelines and processes to ensure seamless transitions.
- Experience in driving communications concerning implementation plans on enterprise, divisional and country level.
- Strategic experience in data management / data analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively across international and cultural boundaries.

$125,300.00 – $250,700.00
