Senior Manager, Engineering - Environmental Sustainability

What you will do

In this vital role you will be responsible for leading the environmental sustainability (ES) strategic initiatives team, facilitating the embedding of sustainability throughout Amgen’s business and operations, and supporting Amgen clients advance environmental sustainability goals. The successful candidate will work out of our corporate campus in Thousand Oaks, CA or other Amgen locations including Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, Ireland, and the Netherlands may be considered.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Oversee and navigate emerging practices, including ES regulations response, climate risk, circular economy, biodiversity, etc.

  • In partnership with multi-functional teams, manage Amgen’s ES responses to new Global regulations; for example, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, the EU Taxonomy Regulation, California SB219, and other future promulgations.

  • Working with global sites and functions, manage an enterprise-level climate scenario analysis, risk assessment and quantification program to ensure alignment with new regulations.

  • Manage ES voluntary disclosures, including CDP reporting.

  • Oversee Amgen’s response to customer requests for ES disclosures across global locations.

  • Advance integration of Sustainability into Amgen’s business and advancing Amgen’s Sustainability Culture

  • Facilitate Amgen’s ES Ambassador program, a cross-site and cross-function network of leaders responsible for integration of sustainability at their sites and within their functions.

  • Manage the purchase of renewable electricity and high quality carbon offsets, including the execution of Power Purchase Agreements.

  • Track biodiversity developments such as TNFD and SBTN and help prepare Amgen for alignment.

  • Support short- and long-term ES budget tracking and productivity identification.

  • Provide insights and progress reports to functions across Amgen, including executive leadership, and externally as needed.

  • Participate in external forums and working groups, representing Amgen as the subject matter expert.

  • Form partnerships with external thought leaders. Identify joint ventures as the opportunity presents.

What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 2 years of corporate services, engineering, or science experience OR

  • Master’s degree and 6 years of corporate services, engineering, or science experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of corporate services, engineering, or science experience OR

  • Associate’s degree and 10 years of corporate services, engineering, or science experience OR

  • High school diploma / GED and 12 years of corporate services, engineering, or science experience

In addition to meeting at least one of the above requirements, you must have a minimum of 2 years experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation or resources. Your managerial experience may run concurrently with the required technical experience referenced above

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passion and interest in environmental sustainability.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Physical, or Life Sciences.

  • 12 plus years of experience developing and supporting Sustainability programs or other technical programs.

  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and strategy development/deployment experience.

  • Experience managing teams as well as personnel performance.

  • Technical depth and strong collaboration in a diverse culture.

  • Risk analysis and financial quantification expertise, across different ES topics.

  • Strong analytical / quantitative skills with an ability to pragmatically apply engineering / scientific first principles.

  • Knowledge of engineering principles to resolve attainable usage reductions / savings for conservation measures.

  • Experience or capacity to quickly understand industrial, laboratory, manufacturing, and building environments / technologies.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, relationship building, and leadership skills.

  • Self-starter with the ability to concurrently manage several projects or assignments.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
