The 21-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Akron General supports a diverse population, from newborns to older adults. This dedicated team of caregivers provides various treatments and procedures for numerous cardiovascular-related conditions and diagnoses. As PCNA, you play an integral role in ensuring patients continue receiving the best treatment possible. You will find a welcoming and hands-on environment where caregivers encourage education, mutual support and teamwork. Each day, you have numerous opportunities to make a difference in your community.    

 

A caregiver in this position works varying shifts, including 3 holidays per year. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for admission, returning surgical patients, transfers or emergencies. 

  • Provide and document assigned care (e.g., bathing, changing and/or refreshing of bed linens, dressing/undressing of patient, back rubs, etc.) and other general care throughout the day to ensure physical comfort. 

  • Collect and document temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight, height and intake/output in an accurate and precise manner. 

  • Assist with pre- and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. 

  • Perform treatment procedures (e.g., venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice packs and heat, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, sets-up overhead trapeze and Buck's traction, removal of urinary Foley Catheters and other therapeutic measures). 

  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. 

  • Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area. 

  • Report any changes observed in the condition or behavior of patient. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) within new hire period 

  • Job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills 

  • Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered 

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) Certification 

  • One year of recent acute care experience
