Job Summary:

Under the supervision of an RN, performs specific duties/ procedures in relation to the care and treatment of patients at the University Hospitals and Clinics.

Education & Experience

High school graduate and any combination of related education and related experience equal to two (2) years or currently employed as a UMMC Student Nurse Extern. Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician preferred. Six (6) months experience as a Nursing Assistant/Orderly or healthcare related position preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Responsibilities

    • Records vital signs accurately and reports any changes to the RN.  Performs venipuncture when ordered.
    • Performs computerized EKGs according to policy and procedure and provides copies for the patient's chart and the heart station.
    • Informs RN of any unusual occurrences or changes in patient's condition.
    • Provides comfort measures to patient and family members as needed.
    • Orders, labels, delivers, and maintains records of lab specimens.
    • Keeps assigned work area clean and stocked.
    • Contributes to the efficient operation of the unit.  Demonstrates the goal of customer satisfaction through interaction with patient family members and other healthcare providers in a compassionate, respectful, courteous, confidential, and caring manner.
    • Attends and participates in appropriate in-service programs, unit meetings, and quality improvement projects.

    Physical and Environmental Demands
    Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, frequent twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
