The Technology Infrastructure Engineering and Operations Team engineers and supports all the foundational technology used across M&T Bank. We support two Data Centers, 15,000 Distributed platforms, 24 Mainframe Regions, a secure and reliable Network connecting all the technology across the bank footprint and process approximately 635,000 automated jobs per month. In addition to that foundational technology level, we own the operational support processes, monitoring and command center that provide a unified, well-managed technology response when issues arise. We deliver innovative, and compelling technology solutions, in partnership with our line of business CIOs, to enhance the internal customer experience that enables our business partners to deliver.
Lead Mainframe Engineer
The Lead Mainframe Engineer provides leadership to the mainframe storage and automation team and serves as a hands-on technical resource responsible for the daily operations. In this role you will be responsible for providing leadership, support, design, installation, configuration, maintenance and testing of IBM-based mainframe hardware, operating systems, systems application software, storage, and systems utilities. You will lead the implementation of changes, resolving incidents and satisfy service requests for mainframe systems and services. Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) and peer mentor to others on the team.
Education and Experience Required:
A combined minimum of 9 years’ higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 4 years’ engineering and/or architecture experience and 3 years leadership experience
Must have experience as a manager, team leader or senior role.
Expertise with core IBM mainframe technologies including but not limited to z/OS, CICS, Storage, DB2, SDSF, JES2, VTAM, ISPF, JCL, VSAM utilities, assembler, ACF2, SQL, CLIST, REXX, COBOL, MQ, SMPE, SMTP, DB2 utilities, mainframe monitors, JCL checker.
Experience in IBM based mainframe storage solutions
Experience in mainframe automation
Experience in code debugging, troubleshooting and triage
Experience in writing/reviewing scripting and light coding for automation routines or storage routines
Experience in batch and real-time mainframe processing methodologies.
Expertise with core inter-networking concepts to include TCP/IP, VTAM, routing, firewalls, DNS, SSL, HTTP/HTTPS and encryption technologies.
Expertise with middleware and data applications such as z/OS Connect, CICS, DB2, MQ or other associated technologies.
Experience encouraging teamwork and serving as role model when leading and directing others
Understanding of technical, business and operational impacts of a project or problem
Education and Experience Preferred:
Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and knowledge of DevSecOps best practices.
Expertise with GDPS, OPS/MVS and IBM System Automation
Experience with CA1/TMS, CA Disk, View/Deliver, IBM DS8K Storage Array system
Bachelor’s degree
Minimum of 10 years’ technology management or large program leadership experience
Extensive application and product knowledge experience with skills, application(s) and functions of technology area led
Subject Matter Expert understanding of applications supported with an advanced knowledge of interfacing/integrated applications
Understanding of multiple business area’s functions
Proven mentoring and leadership capabilities
Experience with skills, application(s) and functions of technology area
Good understanding of the Bank’s application framework
Aware of the Bank’s business plan and strategic objectives with ability to shape direction
Self-motivated and able to motivate others
Understanding business(es) supported and its’ terminology

The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
