ROLE DESCRIPTION
The role of the APAC Learning and Development team is to support the firm’s people strategy through a range of development programmes and initiatives.. It is responsible for the development of APAC Counsel, associates and business team. The team designs and delivers in-house programmes and workshops, commissions and manages external training providers and consultants as appropriate, provides coaching, and liaises with stakeholders to provide a comprehensive learning curriculum. In addition, they advise other internal teams on people-development aspects of their areas of specialism.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES
Reporting to the Chief Learning Officer, the APAC Head of Learning and Development will manage the design and delivery of a range of learning and development programs relating to lawyer development. They will have line management responsibilities for the APAC team. While reporting to the Chief Learning Officer, the APAC Head of Learning and Development will also liaise with senior members of the management team, particularly with the APAC Regional Managing Partner.
Curriculum development, programme and workshop responsibilities:
- Lead the APAC lawyer development function
- Manage the curriculum and activities that support lawyer development, including integration with stakeholders on associate intensives, legal learning, and other activities that impact the lawyer curriculum.
- Oversee the overall design, development, delivery, management, and evaluation of online learning housed on HL Learning Hub (the department’s learning management system), including liaising with global team for consistency.
- Shape the use of technology in extending the learning impact of programs; design and implement blended-learning solutions.
- Maintain and build relationships with internal stakeholders at the most senior levels in order to understand business priorities and gain sponsorship of existing and new initiatives/programming.
- Deliver development activities and modules, including strategic planning and organizing of local associate workshops for all offices done in consultation with local office learning partners and learning committees. Combination of external vendors (e.g., negotiation skills, financial statements, personal impact) and self-delivery (e.g., presentation skills; feedback conversations; team building activities; communication and collaboration skills, etc.).
- Maintain relationships with external providers, consultants and internal program contributors, including partners and senior Business Team professionals.
- Support delivery of the APAC Business Team development workshops in conjunction with the Director of Learning for Business Team, ensuring effective implementation of the agreed strategy.
- Get involved in other learning and development projects and activities as they arise.
- Manage budgets relating to key areas of responsibility.
- Provide ad-hoc coaching for partners and other lawyers, including organizing external coaches where required.
Global programs
- Coach at the senior associate/counsel program, Momentum 1-2 times per year, to include coaching during event, post-program support and follow up coaching regarding development plans.
- Coordinate with other regional leads to ensure curriculum consistency and support global learning initiatives

PERSON SPECIFICATION
The Candidate
Essential: The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in project and people management in learning and development, consulting, or HR business partnering role. They will have a proactive and collaborative approach and enjoy working in a team. They will have significant experience designing alongside subject matter experts, delivering and evaluating development activities. They will have experience of working in a large, global organisation.
Desired: They will have experience of working in a professional service firm environment, ideally a law firm.
Skills and Abilities
Essential:
- Project management: a proven track record of delivering projects in a complex environment is essential, together with an ability to deal sensitively, proactively, and effectively with a range of stakeholders.
- Design, delivery/facilitation and coaching skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including formal and informal presentation.
- Ability to build internal client relationships and demonstrate a client-focused approach at all times.
- Expertise and experience in the design, development, and management of blended learning programs, learning journeys, classroom simulations, game-based learning, and digital learning.
- Ability to create a mind-set shift and adoption across different stakeholders, using proven change management approaches.
Desired:

- Experience of budget management
- Experience with learning strategies and instructional design for instructor led and online learning.

Qualification and Training
Postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject, for example organizational development, learning and development, business/occupational or organizational psychology, or relevant professional qualification.
