SUMMARY

Supervises and coordinates the activities of colleagues engaged in maintaining the efficient operation of the ammonia refrigeration system, fire protection systems, HVAC systems, warehouse and dock equipment, material handling equipment, and storage racking; and the upkeep of the building components and grounds to promote safe, efficient, and optimal utilization of our facilities, equipment, and personnel.  Oversees the activities of colleagues and external contractors responsible for the sanitation and cleanliness of the facility in order ensure food safety compliance and regulatory requirements are met.  Performs all duties safely. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement procedures for preventative, corrective, and emergency maintenance for ammonia refrigeration systems, HVAC systems, fire protection, material handling equipment, storage racking, dock, and warehouse equipment. 

  • Monitor preventive maintenance logs and check lists as required/scheduled. 

  • Schedule and monitor work of outside contractors as needed.

  • Requisition tools, equipment, and supplies.

  • Inspect completed work for conformance to blueprints, specifications, and standards.

  • Responsible for appearance, maintenance and security of warehouse and equipment. 

  • Provide direction and follow up, monitor, and maintain sanitation program to meet industry standards and compliance. 

  • Maintain ePSM to ensure PSM tasks are scheduled and completed in a timely manner to avoid elapsed tasks. 

  • Maintain maintenance software to ensure work orders are assigned and completed in a timely manner.

  • Establish and adjust work procedures and schedules for sanitation and facilities colleagues to meet company needs.  Coordinate the services of any cleaning contractors. 

  • Maintain effective and timely interdepartmental communications.  Coordinate with all operations areas to maintain proper and efficient workflow processes and scheduling.

  • Provide input for the preparation of the department budget for responsible area and maintain department expenditures to adhere to approved budgetary plans. 

  • Foster an environment that encourages colleague involvement, commits to quality of work from self and others, and provides leadership for mutual benefit of the Company, customers, and colleagues. 

  • Ensure that all required colleague records, evaluations, and related documentation are filed in a timely, consistent, accurate and confidential manner.

  • Monitor colleague’s work and perform colleague evaluations on an on-going basis to coach them on expectations, reward above average performance, and identify and coach poor performance levels.

  • Responsible for providing direction and leadership to assigned colleagues, as well as ongoing communication of related status and issues to management.

  • Act as a problem solver for colleague relation issues and department needs.

  • Observe and enforce all safety rules to eliminate accidents and injuries. 

  • Support the safety effort by participating on the safety committee and working with the safety department to resolve safety issues. 

  • Report any unfixable/unsafe issues to supervisor.

  • Enforce lock out/tag out procedures as required.

  • Communicate and reinforce policies and procedures (Coach Card Program and safe work practices) to ensure colleagues are trained in safety, job knowledge, and attainment of performance standards.

  • Plan, schedule to cover vacation, holidays, workers compensation, and other fill-ins, and coordinate personnel needed to accomplish all maintenance activities. 

  • Plan and manage appropriate daily staffing levels to effectively align labor resources with operational needs. 

  • Assist in the performance of maintenance activities including corrective and preventative maintenance as staffing or workload requires. 

  • Assist in personnel recruitment to fulfill staffing requirements. 

  • Support personnel and schedules in the absence of the Manager, Facilities and Maintenance.

  • Maintain effective working relationship between maintenance of all respective operations departments.

  • Understand and comply with all applicable company policies (i.e., attendance, Code of Business Conduct & Ethics, Associate Handbook, etc.).

  • Comply with all applicable State/Federal laws, regulations, and policies (i.e., OSHA, HACCP, etc.).

  • Supports food safety policies, standard operating procedures, and prerequisite food safety control programs that meet legal and quality requirements and industry best practices as defined in our Food Safety Commitment documentation.

  • Accept additional responsibilities or special projects as requested.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for providing direction and leadership for up to twenty maintenance and sanitation colleagues, as well as ongoing communication of related status and issues to management.  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Sysco Redistribution Center Facilities’ policies and procedures and applicable state and federal laws.  Determine and provide training and development of maintenance staff members as needed.  Assist in personnel recruitment to fulfill maintenance staffing requirements.  Responsible for annual colleague performance evaluations of immediate subordinates for the purpose of communicating and properly documenting expectations and evaluations to the staff.  Provide ongoing feedback on the performance of subordinates and the department by monitoring activities and reports.  Administer corrective action to address negative colleague behaviors when appropriate. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills between colleagues, peers, and RDC management. 

  • Must have ability to plan and organize work and time, analyze, and disseminate numerical data, follow policies and procedures, possess basic math skills, and identify and solve problems.  Must have basic computer knowledge.

  • Must pass a functional capacity test. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required.  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university is preferred, or five years maintenance related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Four (4) years of experience in maintenance at the supervisory level, specifically in ammonia refrigeration is preferred. Mechanical aptitude, understanding of facilities equipment and systems, considerable knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems operations and its maintenance requirements are required.  Electrical knowledge is required and energy management system knowledge is preferred.  The completion of a supervisory training program is required. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must be articulate and effective with written and verbal communication with individuals of broadly varying backgrounds and educational levels.  Must have ability to read, analyze and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Must have ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and have the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. 

REASONING ABILITY

It is expected that the incumbent will be able to work in a proactive manner, address issues, and solve problems by using previous education and experience in identifying appropriate actions.  Problems will vary in complexity and there will not always be a clearly defined solution.  Some solutions may require modifying past applications or creating a solution unique to the current situation but within the regulations that would apply. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Certification on material handling equipment is required, or the ability to become certified.  Electrical and refrigeration license or certificate preferred.  Incumbent will be required to complete Ammonia Refrigeration Operator II certification.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  The job is usually performed in maintenance and warehouse type environments and is frequently exposed to varying temperatures to include the freezer, cooler, and dry warehouse environments including temperatures of -10 degrees.  While performing the duties of this job, the colleague is regularly exposed to fast moving material handling equipment or other mechanical equipment.  The colleague is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high, precarious places, vehicle emissions, contained toxic or caustic chemicals, varying voltage electrical equipment and vibration, and outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment usually is loud and may require hearing protection. 

WORK HOURS

This is a full-time position.  The incumbent must have the ability to work a varying schedule which might include shift work (days or nights), weekdays or weekends, and some holidays.  Work hours may vary or change based on departmental requirements and business needs.

TRAVEL

The position may require some travel to support RDC business needs.
