Job Description:

This is a Carer Lived/Living Experience Position – you must state in your cover letter having a lived/living experience of being a family member, carer or supporter (personally, not professionally) of someone with a mental illness -including supporting them in accessing and navigating public mental health services - and describe how this has changed the course of your life.

You must also describe in your cover letter how you have capacity to skilfully and purposefully use your lived/living experience with other family-carer-supporters.

About the Role

You will provide support to the family-carer-supporters of consumers of St Vincent's Mental Health utilising the worker’s own lived experience of caring for someone with mental ill-health and involvement with mental health services to complement the professional knowledge and skills of clinical staff. The role provides carer peer support across a variety of settings including inpatient and community.

  • Provide support either through in-person meetings, video conferencing or phone support as appropriate to meet the needs of family-carers-supporters.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of the program and to the planning, development and implementation of quality improvement projects.
  • Co-Facilitate carer groups


Classifications for this position will range from Lived Experience Worker Level 2 MP32 - MP35 ($68,874 - $73,065 per annum pro rata)


Your Contribution

  • To have the lived or living experience of being a family member, carer or supporter (in your personal life) of someone with a mental illness - including supporting them accessing and navigating public mental health services - in such a way that it has changed the course of your life
  • Demonstrated capacity to skilfully use this lived and living experience and knowledge to support other family-carers-supporters who interact with St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne
  • Ability to provide culturally competent services appropriate to the needs of people from diverse backgrounds including those from a CALD background
  • Understanding or awareness of Carer peer support and single session frameworks
  • A current Victorian driver’s licence.
  • CERT IV in Mental Health OR Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work (desirable)
  • Single session family therapy (or willingness to complete)
  • Intentional Peer Support (or willingness to complete)
  • A valid Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check. or willing to obtain
