Reporting to the Platform Services Manager, this role will focus primarily on IP technologies for cloud and data centers. The role will include design, build, maintenance and operational support activities. The successful candidate will manage network architectures to support network availability, growth and service restoration on VM Ireland’s Core IP Network.
Architect and design the future of the Virgin Media IP Network
Serve as Subject Matter Expert on two or more of the following technologies; MPLS, DTV/Multicast, Voice (SIP/RTP), QoS, Layer 3 Routing, BGP Peering, Carrier Ethernet
Design authority for Access and Core IP networks. Maintain awareness of latest networking trends, and plan for roll out of same on the VMIE network as appropriate
Speak as a representative for the Data Center Technology team when meeting with stakeholders
Perform build, configuration and integration testing with internal and external stakeholders as required. Ensure service deliveries are performed according to delivery milestones and within budget
Carry out software/hardware upgrades & migrations on the core network within maintenance window, in adherence with Change Management procedures
Act as Tier 3 escalation point for all complex faults on the internal IT IP networks, and supported services. Own all escalated issues and apply expert technical expertise to bring issues to resolution within SLA
Configure and support core network elements (P / PE / CMTS / routers / aggregation switches)
Knowledge and hands on experience with protocols such as: HSRP, VRRP, OSPF, BGP, VPLS, MPLS, L2 VPN, L3 VPN, L2TPv3, Multicast, PIM SSM, MVPN, QoS, IPv6, DS-Lite, SIP, RTP, Carrier Ethernet
Experience with AWS, GCP, Azure an advantage
Proven ability to solve complex problems under tight time constraints and an ability to prioritise
Identify and upgrade legacy End-of-Life/End-of-Support equipment, to ensure continued stability of the core network
Raise complex faults into vendor TAC teams as required and assist TAC teams with resolution (including complex fault replication in lab environment)
Manage DHCP IPV4/IPV6 Address requirements for the local business
Relevant third level qualification, ideally in telecoms – essential
5+ years’ experience as a network engineer with a major Telco – essential
CCNP R&S or higher – essential
Hands-on experience with Juniper MX series platforms – essential
Excellent documentation skills - essential
Full clean driving licence - essential
Experience with multi-vendor equipment (Cisco, Juniper, Ciena) – essential
Hands-on experience with Cisco Catalyst, Nexus, ASR and ISR platforms – desired
Experience in scripting through Python or similar – desired
JNCIA/JNCIS - desired
Experience in implementing cloud-based solutions (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) - desired
Flexible approach to working – this role will require on call rota
