About the Unit

The Neonatal ICU is a Critical Care Unit within Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, caring for newborn babies born with various conditions that haven't yet been discharged to go home with their family. We build great relationships with the parents of our NICU babies since they are so frequently here at the bedside. We are the largest NICU in Michigan and care for babies from 37 counties. The NICU unit is a 108 bed unit.

Scope of work

Acts as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Provider. Performs basic skills per department guidelines and communicates observations to members of the health care team. Runs errands for the RN's, helps preform hearing screenings, Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.

Cleans patient’s environment / work area / equipment and communicates any equipment malfunctions to appropriate department / unit personnel.

Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.

Orientation

Orientation begins the first week of employment, with required classes with our Education team from 8am-4:30pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, followed by hands on training shifts 7am-7:30pm on the nursing unit, and an additional 8am-4:30pm class for advanced safety care on Monday of week 3.

  • Required High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support Cert (BLS) required within 90 days
