Job Description:

POSITION TITLE: Adjunct Instructor, Medical Assisting
STATUS: Adjunct
DEPARTMENT: Health and Public Services

REPORTS TO: Department Chair
PLACEMENT: Faculty
MINIMUM PAY RATE: Refer to current adjunct faculty contract

POSITION SUMMARY

1. Adapt to new and changing situations and demonstrate a positive attitude.

3. Position is subject to all terms and provisions of the Joliet Junior College adjunct faculty contract.

4. Course assignments may be late afternoon, evening, Saturday, and at branch campuses or satellite centers.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide in-class instruction/lecture and hands-on training that meets the program and course objectives. (In two-four hour sessions).

2. Participate in course development, assessment, accreditation, and planning activities.

3. Be willing to teach online and/or blended courses.

4. Comply with departmental curriculum, grading standards, attendance policies, textbook choices, and assessments, and other established processes.

5. Return college reports, credentials, and other requested documentation in a timely manner; effectively communicate with appropriate staff and chair.

6. Comply with all legal and ethical obligations, including FERPA, ADA, and other regulatory legislations.

7. Communicate discrepancies to appropriate officials.

8. Possess and maintain a thorough knowledge of the subject matter necessary to the assigned course load; and keep informed of current trends in the medical assisting field and health care.

9. Demonstrate strong understanding and commitment to the community college mission.

10. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence

11. Teach classes during non-traditional times (evenings and weekends) and at clinical and other campus sites as needed.

12. Meet other contractual obligations as spelled out in the Joliet Junior College adjunct faculty contract.

13. Participate in appropriate departmental meetings.

14. Demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning.

15. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Associate degree and be a Graduate of accredited Medical Assisting, or related program recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in Medical Assisting, or related field; or

2. Associate degree and be a Graduate of otherwise recognized training entity in Medical Assisting, or related field; or

3. Associate degree and be a Graduate of institution located outside of the United States and its territories in Medical Assisting, or related field.

4. Three (3) years of occupational experience in Medical Assisting or related field.

5. Hold a current certification or other credential from AAMA, AMT, NCCT, or NHA.

6. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

7. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.

8. Demonstrated commitment to the college’s core values of respect and inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor and well-being, innovation and quality.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Teaching experience at the collegiate level.

2. Experience at the community college level.

3. Experience in teaching online and/or using course management programs.

4. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency. 

5. Demonstrated multicultural competence. 

6. Experience with traditional and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds.
