About the team and the role:

eBay’s Global Shipping Decision Sciences team shapes how buyers and sellers experience shipping on one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms. We mine some of the richest datasets in commerce and apply advanced analytics and data science to unlock insights that improve delivery speed, reliability, and transparency.

As a Data Scientist on this team, you will be both a functional leader and an individual contributor, working across data science, product, and business analytics to influence the shipping product roadmap and business strategy. You will partner closely with product managers, business leaders, engineering, and finance to identify opportunities for growth and efficiency across the global shipping ecosystem, all within a collaborative, inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued.

What you will accomplish:

  • Break down complex shipping and customer experience challenges into structured analytical problems, using hands-on data science and analytics to generate insights that directly inform product and business decisions.

  • Develop and iterate on analytical frameworks, dashboards, and prototype models that reveal trends and opportunities in eBay’s shipping ecosystem, helping teams prioritize high-impact initiatives.

  • Partner with product, business, engineering, and finance stakeholders to design and evaluate shipping initiatives, ensuring that key decisions are grounded in data and aligned with eBay’s strategic goals.

  • Identify opportunities for growth, cost savings, and operational efficiency across the global shipping network, translating findings into clear, actionable recommendations.

  • Communicate insights, trade-offs, and recommendations in a compelling way to partners across functions and regions, enabling shared understanding and faster decision-making.

  • Contribute thought leadership to the Global Shipping Decision Sciences team, sharing best practices, mentoring peers informally, and helping to build a culture of experimentation and continuous learning.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Business Administration, Business Analytics, or a related field; a master’s degree is a plus.

  • Proficiency in analytics and data science tools such as SQL, R, Python, and visualization tools like Tableau, with experience working directly with large, complex datasets.

  • Strong grounding in descriptive and inferential statistics, including the ability to build basic prototype models to explore hypotheses and guide product or business decisions.

  • Experience working as a product or business analyst, or in a similar role, applying a data science mindset to solve problems at scale; familiarity with product analytics and online experimentation (A/B testing) is a plus.

  • Domain experience in shipping, supply chain, logistics, or a related area is a plus, with the ability to quickly understand operational constraints and opportunities.

  • A genuine interest in eBay’s marketplace, a collaborative working style, and the ability to work across time zones and functions to drive impactful outcomes for buyers and sellers.
