Position Summary

What will you be doing?
As an Inclusion Support Worker, you will assist with supporting and integrating campers with disabilities, 4 – 18 years of age, into our Summer Camp programs. You will provide mentorship for camp staff who are supporting campers with inclusion needs. This position reports to the Inclusion Coordinator. As a Break Staff leader, you will support campers during extended care periods (7:30-8:30am and 4:30-5:30pm), and/or while other camp leaders are taking their break during the day. Shifts are typically half day but shift times may vary.

Major Job Responsibilities

What will you be responsible for?

  • Providing one-to-one or two-to-one support to campers with disabilities, ensuring that activities are safe, fun and appropriate

  • Leading activities within the KidsCAN and ICAN Leadership adapted camp programs, as outlined in the daily activity plan.

  • Utilizing the “All about me” camper profile provided by the Inclusion Coordinator to best meet the individual needs and adapt daily activities to ensure meaningful participation

  • Assisting with tasks of behaviour management, personal care including; changing, toileting and feeding as required

  • Acting as a swim buddy in the water during camp swims

  • Supporting our extended care periods (7:30-8:30am & 4:30-5:30pm) as required

  • Following all established departmental safety standards and practices and Employee Code of Conduct

  • Understanding of our standard operating procedures, and supporting the Inclusion Coordinator in applying the established rules and guidelines that oversees the safety and conduct of campers

  • Communicating with parents/guardians about the camper’s day. Sharing reminders, successes and challenges

  • Reporting all accidents, incidents, concerns or site damage to the Inclusion Coordinator, ensuring all appropriate forms are completed

  • Performing all other duties as assigned

Education & Experience

What will we need from you?

  • Ability to work a minimum of 5 weeks throughout July & August at 24 hours per week, to a maximum of 40 hours where required. Hours vary based on program registration numbers. This position typically works a half camp day, Monday – Friday

  • Attendance at all paid, mandatory trainings that occur during evenings and weekends throughout May and June is mandatory and a condition of employment

  • Attendance at all paid, mandatory bi-weekly staff meetings that occur outside of camp hours

What skills and experience are we looking for?

  • Minimum of 16 years of age

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working in a children’s camp environment

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working with persons with disabilities

  • Knowledge of program adaptations and behaviour modification techniques

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills

  • Able to perform all activities including but not limited to: lifting a minimum of 50 pounds

  • Able to swim and comfortable with supporting participants in the pool during camp swim

  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) required

  • Behaviour Management Systems Training (BMS) or equivalent is an asset

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification required

  • Under the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to submit a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening upon employment

HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development and Behaviour Management Systems training are required for this role.  Successful candidates will have the opportunity to attend this certification course as part of the Summer Camp training.
