Location: University of Oklahoma Medical Center

Shift Available: Full-Time (36 hours/week) Nights (7a-7p)

At OU Health University of Oklahoma Medical Center, you’ll find Oklahoma only Level 1 trauma center, the highest possible national designation verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). You receive expert care from a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, healthcare staff and specialists capable of treating the most severe and critical injuries 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

General Description:

Under direct supervision, will utilize medical and technical skills to provide patient care.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • Under direct supervision of the RN and in collaboration with the patient and family, systematically and continually monitors the patient’s health status and implements the plan of care.
  • Carries out physician and nursing orders as directed by the RN.  
  • Takes/records blood pressures, temperatures, pulse and weighs patients.
  • Performs blood glucose monitoring. 
  • Assists the nurse with obtaining/setting up supplies for procedure.
  • Participates in quality checks to decrease Hospital Acquired Conditions.
  • Monitors intravenous infusions and transfusions as directed by RN. 
  • Sets up and discontinues telemetry monitor. 
  • Collects the following specimens for analysis and transport: blood specimen via venipuncture or vacutainer, sputum samples, urine, wound cultures, etc.
  • Applies sterile dressings, removal of sutures, staples and/or drains. Performs all sterile procedures as assigned. Performs stomal irrigation and applies colostomy pouches.
  • Performs oral and tracheostomy suctioning. 
  • Administers tube feedings to patients.
  • Takes emergency actions as required.
  • Performs all treatments and procedures as defined on initial skills checklist.
  • Reports symptoms and significant changes in patient’s condition or behavior to RN. 
  • Assists with admission, discharge and transfer process. 
  • Duties may be performed for one patient or more than one patient.
  • When assigned to one patient, observes the patient and does not leave the patient alone.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: None

Experience: None

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current AUA License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing. Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.          

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  Knowledge of medical practices, procedures, and standards.  Ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care. Basic knowledge of computer systems and good interpersonal skills.
