Your Impact

New Ventures is a department within Axon that drives innovation through dedicated R&D and rapid prototyping. Among its most rapidly expanding areas is the development of robotics for law enforcement and tactical use. Following Axon's acquisition of Sky-Hero, the leading Brussels-based provider of tactical UAVs and UGVs, our focus has intensified on creating cutting-edge indoor aerial and ground drones for elite tactical teams in law enforcement and military special operations.

As a Senior Robotics Simulation Engineer on the Sky-Hero team, you will be instrumental in developing and advancing our simulation capabilities for innovative drone technologies. You will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and optimizing robotics simulation environments, ensuring our developments are thoroughly tested and validated. Your contributions will directly impact the quality and reliability of our products, ensuring they perform effectively in real-world scenarios.

What You’ll Do

Location: Brussels, Belgium
Reports to: Director of Engineering

  • Design, develop, and maintain advanced simulation environments for drone technologies using Gazebo Simulator, and other relevant tools.
  • Develop and implement simulation scenarios to test drone performance, including flight, position hold, obstacle avoidance, etc.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software engineering teams to validate simulation results against real-world performance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to simulation environments and frameworks.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in robotics simulation technologies and propose innovative solutions to enhance simulation capabilities.
  • Involvement in requirements, testing and release procedures, and taking an active part in implementing those procedures, to ensure the quality of deliverables matches the demanding situations and environments Sky-Hero products are expected to operate in
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, sharing best practices and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with internationally distributed teams

What You Bring

  • Degree in Robotics, Computer science, or a related discipline with equivalent of at least 8 years of applied experience in robotics simulation, preferably with a focus on drone technologies, or an advanced Degree with at least 4-6years of applied experience in robotics simulation, preferably with a focus on drone technologies
  • Significant industrial experience with robotics system architectures and systems integration
  • Good proficiency with a prototyping language such as Python, and a production-ready language such as C, C++ or Rust
  • Solid understanding of robotics principles, including kinematics, dynamics, and control systems.
  • Proven track record of successfully developing and implementing complex simulation environments.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • English proficiency required, French and or Dutch are a plus

Any of the following is a plus:

  • Experience with PX4, ROS 2, Gazebo, Isaac Sim, ...
  • Experience with UAV flight control and autopilot systems.
  • Familiarity with computer vision and sensor integration, including cameras, and IMUs.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and real-time simulation.
  • Contributions to open-source robotics projects or active participation in the robotics community.
