Position Summary
Platform as a Service (PaaS) Messaging Team seeks an experienced Senior Staff Engineer passionate about building highly scalable distributed platforms. You will help the PaaS team at GEICO in building a high-performance, low-maintenance, zero-downtime streaming platform that will help transform GEICO's insurance business from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission.
Position Description
Our Senior Staff Engineer collaborates closely with our senior engineers to drive innovation, build scalable systems, enhance existing ones, and discover solutions to critical business challenges. In this role, you will spearhead the development and implementation of our technical roadmap, accelerate product delivery, and provide technical guidance to our engineering team. An ideal candidate will possess extensive technical knowledge in the Open-Source Event Streaming field.
Position Responsibilities
As a Sr Staff Engineer, you will:
Lead in multiple domains, offering technical and strategic guidance to the organization.
Influence and educate Engineering leadership, stakeholders, and engineering teams on technical matters.
Collaborate closely with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering groups to tackle complex challenges.
Design, implement and deploy technical strategies and scalable software in the Platform Engineering domain.
Ensure accountability for the quality, usability, and performance of our solutions.
Serve as a role model and mentor, nurturing technical expertise across our engineering and product teams.
Determine operational processes, measure outcomes for desired results, exhibit adaptability, and champion continuous learning.
Participate in on-call duties and operational support as needed.
Required Qualifications
Extensive practical expertise in designing complex systems, data pipelines, and architectures, focusing on scalability, performance tuning, and proficiency in Messaging and event streaming solutions.
Proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language like Java, Go, or Python.
In-depth understanding of at least one open-source event streaming solution, such as Apache Kafka, Apache Pulsar, or RabbitMQ.
Demonstrated capability in designing experiments, influencing engineering direction, and shaping product roadmaps.
Proven track record of collaborating with engineering teams to transition research into production.
Experience applying quantitative methods to solve analytical problems.
Adept at thriving in a dynamic, startup-like environment
Understanding of Schema Registry and safe schema evolution is a plus.
Familiarity with big data and streaming data architectures, data warehousing solutions, Hadoop, and ETL pipelines is a plus.
Experience
8+ years of experience with 6+ years in Scalable System Design, Architecture, and similar systems.
4+ years of professional Platform as a Service experience
4+ years of experience in open-source frameworks and distributed systems.
Education
· Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience

Annual Salary
$120,000.00 - $261,500.00The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
