Job Description

Our Ottawa division is looking for an energetic student to apprentice as a technical team member within the Product Line Management (PLM) organization. The position supports Viavi’s fiber-optic lightwave test systems, working at the intersection of engineering, product strategy, and customer use-cases.

The student will have opportunities to participate in the definition and evolution of state-of-the-art optical test products, help evaluate design trade-offs, product evolution, roadmap development, and contribute to decisions that balance technical performance, manufacturability, cost, and customer value in a highly technical domain.  This role offers a front-row seat to the full product lifecycle – from concept and feasibility through development, release and customer adoption.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong mix of technical curiosity, analytical thinking, great communication skills, and systems-level perspective, underscored by a strong work ethic. We are looking to train and invest in a diligent and adaptable student who enjoys bridging engineering detail with product intent.

Responsibilities

In this role there will be a dual focus on technical depth and product-level thinking. The task is to help translate technology, customer needs, and system constraints into clear product requirements and actionable insights that drive innovation at Viavi.

Responsibilities include:

• Assist with definition and maintenance of product requirements, specifications, and feature roadmaps
• Support evaluation of new technologies, architectures, and design approaches in collaboration with R&D teams
• Analyze system performance, trade-offs, and customer use-cases to inform product decisions
• Develop and maintain technical documentation such as requirement matrices, competitive analyses, and application notes
• Support cross-functional communication between engineering, manufacturing, marketing, and customer-facing teams
• Participate in investigations and data-driven analyses, helping to summarize findings and recommendations for stakeholders

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to analyze complex technical information and synthesize it into clear, actionable insights
• Positive outlook and strong curiosity about technology, systems, and how products succeed in the market
• Background or coursework in engineering physics, electrical engineering, optics, or a related technical field. 
• Preference given to Engineering-and-Management style applicants.
• Comfort working with data, simulations, or test results; experience with tools such as python, Excel, or similar is an asset
• Team player with strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to multitask and collaborate closely within cross-functional teams
• Demonstrated accountability and ownership of assigned work
• Familiarity with optical systems, fiber-optic technologies, or test and measurement concepts is an asset
