On this unit we will provide care for our patients with an interdisciplinary team including psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, social work, chaplains, behavioral health nurses and behavioral health technicians. This unit is designed to provide programing, activities, and education to strengthen our patients’ mental and behavioral health.

About Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital

We fight for every child. With 350+ pediatric specialists and subspecialists, 12 years of U.S. News & World Report national rankings and innovations that draw patients from all over the world, we're driven to replace fear with hope and doubt with answers. We believe in the possibility of every child's future. Because it's only impossible until it isn't. We have both inpatient and ambulatory spaces as well as a Level 1 trauma Emergency Department designated to children.

Scope of work

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) is a role that provides and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient requiring direct observation. Working under the delegation of the Bedside RN, the BHT collaborates with the Nurse, Behavioral Health team, MSW, and the Medical Team to upload the established behavioral plan for the patient. The BHT is trained in verbal de-escalation and situational awareness and provided education on the variety of patient populations encountered. The BHT is cross-trained to a limited scope of the Nursing Technician role to learn the skills and tasks of daily patient care and ADLs.

Employees in this role love the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life when they are going through a difficult time. They enjoy providing care, offering a supportive environment, and partnering with various disciplines.
