Job Description Summary

The Product Cost-Out Leader plays a critical role in maintaining competitive business/project margins while ensuring FPY and OTD objectives are met. The primary purpose for this role is to drive system level cost reductions across the product lifecycle without compromising the safety, reliability, contractual commitments or regulatory compliance of energy assets.

Job Description

The Gas Power Engineering Product Cost Out (PCO) Leader will be responsible for inclusive coordination, strategy development & target setting, daily management (did we win the week), reporting progress and boundryless sharing of information.  The role in Engineering will focus on metals, core equipment/parts & configurations and requires solid cross functional leadership as well as accountability for delivering outcomes aligned to GP objectives.

Additional responsibilities include:

1. Strategy and Portfolio Management

  • Cost-Out Roadmap Development: Define and execute a multi-year strategy to reduce the "Should-Cost" of products through design optimization, supply chain negotiation, and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Prioritization: Analyze the product portfolio to identify high-spend components where cost-out efforts will yield the highest return on investment (ROI).
  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Work closely with Product Management and Engineering leadership to ensure that cost-reduction targets align with long-term product roadmaps and market pricing pressures.

2. Engineering and Design Optimization

  • Design for Cost (DfC): Lead "Value Engineering" or "Value Analysis" (VE/VA) workshops to challenge current designs, eliminate over-engineering, and identify alternative materials or simplified assembly processes.
  • Should-Cost Modeling: Utilize bottom-up cost modeling to understand the true cost of raw materials, labor, and overhead for specific components, providing a benchmark for engineering teams.
  • Design Change Governance: Oversee the technical impact of proposed changes, ensuring that cost-out initiatives undergo rigorous design verification and validation (DV&V) to prevent technical debt or quality issues.

3. Sourcing and Supply Chain Collaboration

  • Supplier Engagement: Partner with global sourcing teams to renegotiate contracts, identify lower-cost manufacturing regions, or qualify new suppliers for commodity parts.
  • Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Analysis: Move beyond purchase price to analyze landed costs, including logistics, duties, inventory holding costs, and quality-related costs.
  • Vertical Integration Analysis: Evaluate the strategic trade-offs between "make vs. buy" scenarios to optimize the overall value chain.

4. Operational and Financial Tracking

  • Benefit Tracking and Validation: Establish a robust financial tracking system to report realized savings to finance and leadership, ensuring savings are felt by the P&L.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Partner with finance to set annual "cost-out" targets and track performance against these milestones.
  • Risk Management: Monitor potential risks associated with cost-out initiatives—such as supply chain disruptions or quality variance—and implement mitigation plans.

5. Change Management and Culture

  • Cross-Business Benchmarking: Act as a conduit for best practices, sharing successful cost-out methodologies across different business units.
  • Cost-Conscious Engineering: Foster a culture where design engineers are trained to consider cost as a primary design constraint, similar to performance or durability.

Additionally, in coordination with Product Management, this leader will co-develop sustained standard work processes for how product cost out will be run from approval right thru execution / implementation.  This position will report to the Gas Turbine Engineering Leader. 

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or 10 years' experience in lieu of degree
  • Minimum of 8 years of industry experience

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $152,400.00 and $254,000.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.

 

 

Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
