JOB SUMMARY
Provide optimal dental health for patients seen in the Dental Center. The dental hygienist works under the supervision of the Dental Center dentists. Practice includes oral prophylaxis procedures, exposure and processing of X-ray films of the teeth and surrounding structures, the application of chemical compounds designed to be desensitizing agents or effective agents in the prevention of carries, administration of local anesthetics, scaling and root planning and services which may be performed by a dental assistant.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Patient Care
Reviews patient’s dental chart prior to appointment. Provides dental health education to the patient. Cleans and sets up treatment room in between patients.
Take pre and post-op blood pressure for each patient receiving local anesthetic
Performs radiographs as ordered by the dentist
Provides hygiene treatment to adult, and geriatric patient populations. Documents and accurately records pertinent clinical data including periodontal probings.
2. Communication
Consider the emotional and physical needs of the patient to maintain or achieve the health status of a well-informed, reassured patient.
Demonstrates ability to explain dental and hygiene procedures to patient.
Reports to the dentist any changes in patient’s oral condition.
Provides front desk personnel scheduling plan for patient.
Gives support and reassurance to the patient during procedures.
3. Procedure Assisting
Performs chairside assistance. Anticipates the needs of the dentist. Provides pre and post-teaching to patients.
Updates patient’s oral history and chief complaint for the dentist to review.
Assures cleanliness of operatories, lab and utility rooms.
Maintains patient safety as a visible priority; such as, use of patient identifiers and hand washing.
4. Documentation
Maintains patient confidentiality by always closing patient encounter when leaving the terminal unattended.
Adheres to all HPPAA standards.
Is knowledgeable of the electronic medical record updates/upgrades.
Report all Epic, Meditech issues to the Health Information Technology
5. Equipment and facility management
Has a working knowledge of all dental equipment and accessories
Inspection and maintenance of equipment used in the treatment of the patient including sharpening of instruments.
Reports any malfunctioning equipment, takes the equipment out of servie , and tags it appropriately.
Maintains OSHA and infection control guidelines. Prepares instruments for Central Sterilization

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS
Frequent contact with patients, patient’s family members, dentist, dental office supervisor, dental hygienist, salespeople, dental insurance companies, accounting department, infection control, materials management and other departments as necessary to perform duties
ENVIRONMENT
Health and stamina able to tolerate prolonged standing and walking and long periods of time assisting chair side.
Requires full range of body motion including walking, standing, twisting, handling, reaching, grasping, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions
Lifting requirements up to 10 lbs. occasionally or frequently
Potential exposure to airborne diseases: 100% of the time
Potential risk of blood borne exposure: 100% of the time
Some travel outside the hospital is involved using own transportation: 0%
